And if he's bad-mouthing you to your mutual friends, tell them why you stopped being his friend in the first place. They need to know what a tool he is.

Yup, this guy is a complete and total asshole. If I were in your shoes he wouldn't be able to say or do anything to convince me to try to be all buddy-buddy and friendly in public.
Get rid of him. He obviously wants to bone you and probably date you but you wont let him - there is a fundamental difference in your attitudes towards one another. No matter what happens or how you disguise it, or how he pretends that he wants to be friends or whatever, it is clearly a big mess and he wants one thing and you want another.
There is no rescuing the situation. End of. Get rid of him, and any friends that you share with him, otherwise it will just keep going on and be an endless source of stress.
There are plenty of people in the world, find other ones to hang out with.
