Are all Irish guys drunkards? The accent is just so adorable...

Like any far sweeping question about a group of people, I figured I'd do my due diligence first. My research led me to this bookish comment found on the www: Irish people love to drink because there really is f*ck all else to do in most Irish towns.

Now, not being Irish or ever have traveled to The Emerald Isle I can't argue with that, but my sense is that of course not all Irish are drunks. That's ludicrous. In fact not all Irish drink. Just as not all Americans are clinically obese or all British have funky-ass teeth. I assume the question was asking generally, what's up with the Irish and the drink, and for that I have a simple answer. There is a deep cultural and social relationship with alcohol in Ireland. It's woven into the fabric of day-to-day life and partaking in a drink is customary practice, like sipping tea or coffee.

Ireland isn't entirely unique in this regard. Russia has a strong drinking culture as does Poland, Australia and Cancun during Sorority Week. But the Irish are also known for being spirited and lyrical. Mix that with some liquid courage and often you get a cocktail for good times. Here in New York, if you are so lucky or unlucky to go on an all night bar-crawl, you will inevitably bump into clusters of lovely Irish folk draped over each other swilling beer, and getting down in hardcore rollicking. Add a soccer match or "O'" in front of the bar name and you can amplify that by ten.

So there you have it. Please feel free to add your own theories and violent stereotypes below. As per the adorableness of the accent, you got no arguments here. Who wouldn't want to cozy up to THIS
or even THIS

I lived in Ireland for a year and go back frequently to visit. And my boyfriend's from Cork...
I can assure you, most Irish people are not drunkards. Yes, there is a culture of drinking, but the majority of people can hold their liquor and they only drink socially. I'm so tired of the stereotype that the Irish are drunk slobs. And actually, I found more women there than men had no idea of their limits!

I personally know more Aussie drunkards than Irish ones, and I certainly don't think that all Aussies are drunkards based on that!!

Oh and I meant to include, Irish accents are incredibly hot, there's no denying that!! I'm just happy my boyfriend doesn't have a rural Cork accent, those are completely impossible to understand!

I am from Ireland so I guess anything I say will be slightly biased. I wouldn't say we are all 'drunkards' but we do enjoy a good drink. As the experienced drinkers that we are we could probably drink you, your father and your grandfather under the table. Put an irish person in a bar anywhere in the world and your guaranteed a good time, put an irish person in an irish bar? Hold on to your hat! Drinkin, dancin', quick witted laughs (probably at your expense) and generally acting the lig is what we do best. We will either take you under our wing and love you OR for reasons unknown, even to ourselves wish to fight you - such is our temperament. Most but not all irish men enjoy a good fight (especially when under the influence) do not let this put you off - they know no better. Nor should you be alarmed to find that five minutes after said brawl he will be standing at the bar declaring this former foe as his new best friend, patting him on the back and buying him a drink. MY BF is from a different country and when he first met me, my friends and family members he was equally fascinated and intimated by the amount of alcohol we can put away. I wouldn't put too much emphasis on the 'drunk' thing being an issue despite the health risks- i guess in a way it IS a cultural habit. Enjoy it, go along for the ride and you may find yourself picking up friends from all sorts of places (as we irish tend to do). Its all part of the craic!

PS that guy full well knows his accent is cute. You have little to no chance against an irish mans charm.
