Cary, how do I make everyone happy for Christmas? I quit one of my jobs to keep up with school and went two weeks w/o groceries to buy gifts for my best friends. Money is VERY tight. I can't afford to get everyone something. What do I say when they ask?

Who's everybody? I'm not expecting a gift, so scratch me off your list. I don't think Nick is, either. Mystery Man might be, but tell him tough titties, funds are tight. See there? I just saved you $15.

But seriously.. who is everybody? Who expects gifts from us other than family and close friends? Your family knows you are struggling, so they shouldn't expect anything, and you said you've already bought stuff for your close friends. Beyond that, who do you have to make happy? No one, that's who.

No one should ever expect a gift; that's why they're called gifts. Anyone who asks why you didn't get them something isn't much of a friend in the first place. The people you typically buy gifts for should know about your situation and expect nothing. In fact, the truly thoughtful ones would tell you ahead of time not to get them anything because they know you are low on funds and would rather see you eat than buy them a new pair of Booty Pops.

The whole Christmas gift thing has gotten so ridiculously out of hand. Sure, exchanging presents is nice, but when people start expecting things, there's a problem. The holidays are supposed to be about spending time with people we love, not spending money we don't have and hours in the mall.

You're a struggling student. We've all been there. I used to sell blood and organs just to buy Christmas gifts, and I regret that now. Turns out kidneys are kind of important. I wish someone had told me that. I'd like my eye back, too. So don't anything like that for money.

People who know you and love you will expect nothing, and they wouldn't want you fretting over what gifts to give them. If you feel you must give them something, there are ways to come up with presents that cost next to nothing. Just look around the web for creative and inexpensive gift ideas.

Otherwise, give them a kiss on the cheek and say, "Merry Christmas!" and let your friendship be your gift.

I understand trying to buy for everyone and the guilt that can come from not feeling as though you are able to do that, but that is not what Christmas is about. So why not get your friends together and do a White Elephant exchange, share drinks and just enjoy the holiday.

Whenever I need to give a ton of people gifts, I bake a bunch of different types of cookies and make little cookie baskets. The other option is to give them homemade fudge.

Food goes a long way. I'm perfectly happy with food as I am with objects.

Personally I give out free Reiki treatments. Learn a trade and give those skills away.

Christmas actually infuriates me more than make me feel happy and giddy all over. Even when I'm buying somebody a gift I have this haunting feeling that the gift isn't good enough. Given the gift cost me $5 but I'm a college student too and I used the money I got from selling books for gifts..but I told myself that at least I'm getting them a gift and if they don't like it then they can give it back because that means they'e not true friends who appreciate my friendship....ha!
