The preference depends on the guy, but in this particular case, your desires do need to come first, for two reasons: one, the hair down there serves as a dry lubricant, so skin doesn't rub against skin and start hurting.
Two, it's pretty involved to shave your pubes. Most people I know, male or female, just make sure it's not totally unruly and leave it at that. Besides, if you get to the point where he's seeing you naked, his taste in pubic hair is probably the last thing on his mind.
Honestly the answers are appreciated but the subjectiveness of the answers-to which you try to make it objective makes it frustrating to read these answers. In a world of uncertainties, us women would like to know that certain things are, well, certain. So next answer (if similar to the context of this one), please try and ask a few friends around to get an average answer.
But the truth is there isn't only one style of female grooming men like. So come down on one would be misleading. RP is right anyway, you should do what you feel sexy and comfortable with, why should what random websites on the internet arbitrarily choose be more valid than that when you're deciding?
If you want a sample of what men like - one male friend of mine likes all body hair removed, another thinks over-grooming is unnatural and thinks hair down there is sexy, my boyfriend is always over-joyed to see my crotch regardless of the state it's in.

OMG thank you RP! I had sex with a friend once and ever since then he has harrassed me about needing to shave off all my pubes. I have tried shaving and HATED it, if a guy says shaving will make or break a relationship I say okay GTFO. I know girls that always shave whether they're seeing someone or not and can't stand not being shaven, and if a guy says he'd prefer if they had some pubes they laugh at him.
