That's a tough one to call over IM. It could be like "Hey, yooooou" said all slow and smooth in order to be flirty. (Sort of like Joey's "How you doin?" line from Friends.) Or it could be like, "Hey you person with whom I have an acquaintance. How are you doing?" (I assume he's not saying it in a rude way and/or referencing the famous Pink Floyd song of the same name.) Was there an emoticon? A smiley face, perhaps? Or one of these winky, flirty bad boys? ;)
I'd say it's a little flirtatious. Usually it's something you'd say to someone you're happy to see. At the very least, he feels comfortable enough to be forward with you. I wouldn't register for wedding gifts or anything, but it's definitely worth an IM back. Next time he writes "hey you," say "hey yourself" back. See if he takes the flirty bait.
