It's their fault. Some guys are just skeezy. Swat 'em off like flies.
You're probably friendly, and they take that as a green light to scam on you. "She gave me the time. That means she wants to bone down behind my girlfriend's back!" It's sad, really. All you can do is give off the "not interested" vibe and hope they take the hint. Also, call out the fact that they're scumbags for hitting on you. If you're even remotely nice, they'll take it as flirting. Better to just shut them down entirely.
Determine early on whether or not the guy has a girlfriend. If you're a creep magnet, it can't hurt to be on your guard. If you're suspicious, grill him on personal details. If he's cagey about his relationship status, run the other way. Look for signs in body language or vocal changes to determine whether he's telling the truth. (Also, look for the telltale wedding ring mark.)
It can never hurt to be a little wary of new guys, particularly in the dating scene. Keep your guard up at first in order to weed out the jerks and cheaters. If he's single and interested, he'll keep trying. In the meantime, walk around like you've got "Douchebag Free Zone" tattooed across your forehead.

thanks so much!! I've been meaning to ask the same question...or maybe I did and I forgot...hmmm the world may never know...lol oh well thanks for answering it, I def wondered the same thing.
Tempest.. Are you returning eye contact? and what makes you think your a slut because I guy is approaching you? what is he saying?
I always look everyone in their eyes, its not a flirty thing. I look everyone in their eyes when I speak to them and greet them, whether its a stranger or a person I know. I know i'm not a slut- but cuz guys act the way they do, I wonder if they think i am for some strange reason. They always flirt with me and ask me out and things are cool... then I find out they have a girlfriend. It has happened more than once, sometimes the guys were actually friends of mine who kept the girlfriend secret, other times just guys i've met randomly. Its really hurtful. I end up crying and leave them. Then here I am single again and feeling dumb cuz i was duped again. its like wtf?! why cant a non douche non male whore like me and approach me for once? why cant it end cuz we arent compatible rather than cuz theres another woman? u know?
Oh man, I am the ultimate sleezebag magnet. I've become suspicious of every guy because of it, every guy who approaches me seems to be this way. They are usually taken or just going around scamming sweet girls =/ . I've learned the hard way
