Interesting question, and one which rarely comes up. Most one nighters are the result of being totally wasted, so it is hard enough to remember who it was and what they looked like, never mind being embarrassed about it.
There are no real rules, but there are a few guidelines that most of the guys I know use. I don't see why you should not use them too. Bear in mind the guy usually goes to the gal's house, so modify these as necessary.
1/ Eat nothing at their home. Eating together is, in some ways, much more intimate than sex, and changes the vibe from light, no hassle fun to domestic. Drinking is fine, of course.
2/ Use their bathroom for clean-up and a pee only, nothing else. Anything else, hold it til you get home. This one is fixed in stone.
3/ Stick around and cuddle for a bit afterwards. It is very important to allow time for a rematch! Remember, guys take a while to recharge. Gals don't.
4/ Do not fall asleep, and leave before dawn. Set the scene for this before you get there. A white lie - "I have to be up early in the morning" is fine.
5/ Do not leave anything behind. One night is one night - you should not be going back to pick up your phone or iPod. Anything, in this case, includes your phone number.
6/ Remember to say "See you again, sometime." as a statement, not a question. It implies you had a good time, enjoyed yourself immensely, and are up for another no strings bit of fun some unspecified time in the future.
7/ When you have a one nighter with someone, avoid picking up any of their friends for several weeks. It gets you a bad reputation.

Oh wow, Good rules! This has been a real problem area for me in the past - i never know what to do!! Personally i leave straight after or never stay after 6am. I too in the past have had "suprised" guys. When i first slept with my boyfriend (which was intended to be a one night stand) i left while he was in the bathroom without saying goodbye - partially because i was still drunk and partially because i didnt want the akward goodbye to ruin the FANtastic sex we just had. But anyway, he ran after me shouted at me for being crazy called me a coldhearted bitch and then ...suprisingly (?) took me back to his and we've been together ever since! But it took me a while to get out of that 6am leaving habbit, i mean who really wants to do the walk of shame at rush hour, not delightful, nor pretty.

What happens if the sex is so good that you want to keep having it? Have no idea how to play that game cause the dude is so hot I end up wanting to date him. Grrrr
God I asked this question! Ha he said to me (because I left before 6am!) that he had wanted me to stay over and that he wanted to wake up next to me next morning (woops!) all I can say is that I really really wasn't sure what to do, and panicked!
