It's a sort of sad thing to witness, but I'm sure you've watched nature shows and have seen it many times before. The alpha and the beta. That's right; there are really only two types of guy-(mammal) behavior when it comes to direct competition for a lady (mate or food).
The alpha types will try to assert their dominance through might and force. Depending on the dude it can be through flaunting actual muscle size, or wallet size, intellect size or a complete charm offensive.
On the other pole you have the beta type. The beta boy will lay low, watch the alpha make an alphole of himself and try to win over the girl after the alpha spins-out into pathetic irrelevance.

Sometimes the alpha wins the day. His looks and balls are too big to deny. Sometimes the alpha breaks his neck and the beta boy has a chance to advance. Sometimes two alphas go against each other, lock egos and go at the girl tit for tat. Look what I can do. Oh yeah? Look what I can spend. Oh yeah? Look at my abs. Oh yeah? Look at my crotch. Sometimes two betas will go at it and it becomes more a war of attrition and soft sells. Can I walk you home? Maybe I'll see you this weekend? It's more chess than chest beating.
What's most interesting to me is seeing what sort of lioness the lady is. Does she go into heat for the Frat King or does she get hot and bothered for the bookish Prince?

Honestly, I don't like either of them. Bookish Princes seem to feel entitled by virtue of being nice, but Frat Kings do stuff like show up to dates completely drunk. Seriously? Granted, I'm in college...
My Prince wooed me with constant, caring attention. As seeing as I had only fallen for women before it took a year of this before I showed how well it was working. Granted, he isn't a college boy. But his interest was shown via constant texts (including first thing in the morning and last thing before going to bed) and memorizing my every voice inflection - it's every meaning.
I told him regularly we'd never be more than friends.
What made me fall hopelessly for him was not all the attention but that it was given without expectation. Without manipulation.
That was worth losing my gay-card for.
