Girls' BFF

How do I comfort a girl who is crying? She's not my girlfriend. Just a good friend, and she has panic attacks about going to sleep and they make her really emotional sometimes

Just be there for her. And hold her. That's about the most you can do. There aren't many words you can use or anything you can go out and buy. The best thing you can do is hold her and tell her it will be okay and just be there with her.

I was going to try to write this whole thing about why that matters but at the end of the day, it just does.

That's how you do it.

A hug is worth a thousand words! Even if it's one of those awkward hugs!
Also just simply sitting with her and letting her blubber at you for as long as it takes is often more appreciated then you'd expect!
You don't need to come up with anything profound, gbff is bang on the mark, just be there for her. Tissues and honest replies to questions about the state of a girl's makeup are also nice though too. :p

I found that to be very poignant.

For what it's worth, Panama, you're a hell of a guy. :)

... and if you're worried about a hug having some sort of sexual overtones or something, don't. Trust me, if your hug is about being supportive and being there for someone then that's how it'll come across. Trust me, if you're genuine you won't come across as some sort of creeper.

He won't come across as a creeper, but she might misinterpret his comfort as something more. It's an emotional time for her and, like any good friend, he wants to comfort her, but on her end, it's a very distinct possibility that she'll tie any stability and comfort to him specifically. It's a very short hop across from that to infatuation.

Just sayin....don't ignore her or avoid comforting her, but definitely be aware of where it might go on her end. Open eyes.

What about comforting a guy who's down in the dumps? We're good friends and he broke up with his fiance a while back. Some days talking and listening dont seem to help much, so if he would have been a gf I wouldnt hesitate to hug him. But he's a bit of a macho type, so I'm scared it would maybe make him uncomfortable. Is hugging really different for men?
