The best way to find out the timeline is to ask about the timeline. You're going to be making some serious life decisions soon, so you owe it to yourself and your boyfriend to go into these decisions as informed as possible.
My advice is to sit him down over dinner and talk about your future. Tell him that you care about him, that you want this relationship to work, and that you're willing to make career plans that would be good for the both of you. You've been dating for eight months, and that is enough of a history for this conversation not to be weird. He's not going to get scared off.
Not talking about this would be doing you and him a great disservice. Don't make life decisions based on assumptions and guesses. Talk about it first, then talk about it again, then start figuring things out.
