but for once I'm actually in agreement with MM. I mean, in general why do we need to know what he's thinking ALL THE TIME?

I think everyone needs some space. It's phrased in typical douchebag MM way but I think that's the general sentiment. Sometimes people space out. My best friend does that. He broke up with a boyfriend who kept demanding to know what he was thinking. He even tried asking me "when he stares into space like that, what is he thinking?" I said, "I don't know" and I got "you're his best friend and you don't know!?" But it's true. He IS my best friend but I don't feel the need to fill up the silences with speech all the time. I'm comfortable enough with him such that if he stares into space and daydreams/thinks of whatever I don't need to know what he's thinking about. And he is a rather day-dreamy person, so it happens a lot -- as he said -- he's just like that.

Sometimes my mind runs to my research (or even worse, the research of my friends!) when I'm idle and I'm not sure everyone would want to hear about it. Especially if my thoughts haven't been sorted out yet -- I'd be annoyed if someone kept interrupting the process. I assume it's the same for others -- it could be anything -- a newspaper article, a tv show... I'm sure people muse randomly on events/ things in the media every now and then and it's unfair to demand to know what they're thinking *all the time* -- of course every now and then a "what's on your mind" doesn't hurt!
