It depends on what you want to get noticed for.
If you are going out just to have fun with your friends, wear sensible shoes, bring a warm coat and dance when your friends dance. If a guy wants to buy you a drink, let him.
If you are going out to get a couple of phone numbers, wear heels, bring a warm coat but wear a flattering dress under it, and dance when you see hot guys on the dance floor. If a guy wants to buy you a drink, let him and talk him up a little bit.
If you are going out because you want sex by midnight, wear platform heels, leave the coat at home and show a ton of skin, and dance on every surface in the bar. If a guy wants to but you a drink, make out with him.

The only reason you should be trying to get noticed at the club is if you want a little string-free hanky panky. If you're on the hunt for more meaningful male attention going to the club is going to do nothing but disappoint (and annoy).
I'm glad my friends have finally outgrown the club thing - I always hated getting dragged there. I'd go to the club with them wearing jeans and a band t-shirt and try to just dance with my friends, get nice and loaded and have a good time in spite of the terrible music and overwhelming smell of Axe Bodyspray. Yet, it never failed that I'd get groped and hit on several times throughout the night... meanwhile, the girl in the tight little miniskirt so short you could see her vajayjay when she bent even slightly, dancing on the speakers would be largely ignored until about midnight and then swarmed by every testosterone filled person in the room.
