I think he was probably mulling over ways to let you down nicely... but when that failed he just spit it out. Rather that than have you build up false hope.

A. he wanted to make sure he understood what you mean by like
imo its most likely ---> B. he was scared to just say he likes you...ive personally done this one.
C. he was a bit shocked you even asked but held his composure and took his time to respond.
