Start by spinning it into a joke, "What, you'd rather I text you every hour?" and then see if he's really being serious or maybe just joking around and it's not coming through.
If he's not joking, I'd seriously consider moving on, to be honest. It's good that you're not clingy: it's bad that he kinda is, and passive aggressive about it. You are right, after all: communication is a two-way street, and he should occasionally give you a call.

I think guys get to be level 5 Klingons the older they get. Seems like every other 40 something guy I date, creeps me with the squeeze play to the point it’s suffocating.
