We guys have many, many words for slutty girls, but sexy isn't one of them. Sexy is always positive, never negative. When a guy calls you sexy, he isn't calling you a slut. He's hoping that your exterior covers a boiling volcano of passion, maybe, but not expecting it.

As to which is better, they are both a sight better than being ignored or called ugly. They both mean attractive. Sexy usually means "attractive to me," cute usually means "attractive, but not to me."

But I don't fully agree with Mistery Man about the fact that being called "cute" could mean "attractive, but not to me". I'm the "cute" type of girl, not the sexy one (except when I make real efforts lol), and I still attract guys. Most of the guys I dated called me "cutie" and they still were on fire each time we got in the bedroom, though I barely got the "sexy" compliment.
But it's true that if you got called sexy, it's because you're really attractive! you're pretty lucky! ;)
I never thought of "sexy" as a compliment, but I guess it is. I've been called that since high school when I did nothing to my appearance. Now that I dress very nicely and have spruced up my appearance to enhance my natural features I get called "gorgeous". Does gorgeous mean "attractive, but out of my league"? ~ Luck girl

I have a bit of the same problem. I never wear anything too revealing because I'm too shy to but I get called sexy. The problem is, I only get grab assed and nobody wants to take me seriously. And the whole 'my eyes are up here' thing... I hate it. I've never had a man who hasn't turned around and told me it wasn't just sex, when I thought otherwise. They all turn out to be sexed up little boys that pretend to care about me.

There is a rather sad male myth, that kicks in in the late teens, that you have to be cool. Appear disinterested. No one knows where it comes from, but all guys go through this stage, without exception.
If they consider you attractive, calling you cute diminishes the threat to their manhood. It's a bit like when you got your hair pulled by a boy when you were 10. He is into you, but feels threatened by the power you have over him. It is a way of putting someone who is way out of their league mentally in reach.

Hmm interesting. I read your "in depth" description of "cute". I didn't realize that a person could be categorized using numbers of some arbitrary ten point scale. I guess I just grew up in a crazy world where people were more than just the sum of their parts. I happen to think that somebody who is true to who they are and confident in themselves is not only the definition of sexy...but also, very sexy.
And for the record, not to say that looks aren't important at all, a person with a 10 personality...is a 10, to me. Looks fade.
