I heard from a friend that the calculation of acceptable dating age difference is half one's age plus 7 (and only counts for those 14 and over). What do you think?

Yeah, I've heard that one, too. What do I think? I think that love and math have very little to do with each other. What if you fall in love with someone outside that range? And who came up with that equation, anyway? I don't think it was Pythagoras.

I say date who you want to date regardless of age (as long as it's legal, of course). I do think that like any significant difference between two people--race, nationality, religion, etc.--a big age gap can bring its own set of challenges to the relationship. The less you have in common, but more difficult it can be. But then, all relationships have challenges, so don't let that stop you from dating the person who makes you happy.

Thanks for the question.

That formula is all very well until you fall for someone slightly outside that bracket and you're all 'argh my formula!' and then you decide to forget about the formula and find yourself in a happy, fulfilling relationship.
It's probably useful as a guideline for dating if you're a bit unsure though!

Haha Pythagoras didn't even come up with the theorem named after him, his followers did - after he died. They made many mathmatical discoveries in spite being persecuted because they had obnoxious personalities, like I do, including the Pythagorean Theorem. But they were fanbois in every meaning of the word, and gave him post-mortem credit.

Really, though, as long as both parties are at or older than the legal age of consent in the jurisdiction of residence, age differences don't matter. It's only judgemental busibodies who are, and we know where we can tell them to go.

My age rule is that he shouldn't be young enough to be my child or old enough to be my parent. And all I can say to reinforce that is that I once fell head over heals for a guy 17 years younger than me and that was a big mistake. But each to his own.

I am 42 she is 19 we met when she was 17 waited till we really thought is was right and are still together, only prob we have is waiting to be able to go out drinking legally. I agree with the maths though I have to say 42 goes into 19 very very nicely indeedy I must say. envy of all my friends and alot of people will stare and look at you if your making out and think stuff but i get used to it. I have not ever found a sexual partner my own age or even closer over the years that compares. we are compatable and on the emotional level is where it really matters, if there is a decrepency then it will be obvious. but I do have to say I know a young woman who is with a man in his 60's and its not working for her now. so life partner ? or just while your both younger.
