It was definitely because of the drinks. If he wasn't able to perform at all, it could have been because of you or the alcohol, but since he was able to "get it up" just not complete the transaction it sounds like it was the booze.

The best way to find out is to meet up with him on a non-boozy night and give it another go. I think you'll find the situation improves dramatically.
