He likes you. The sports stuff was just to break the ice. If he was just looking to talk sports, he has about a bajillion forums on the Internet for that. He probably has plenty of male (or female) friends who he talks sports with constantly. That's my hunch anyway. I suppose he could be a crazy sports nut who just wants someone to talk to.
Even though they won't admit it, sports fans can be pretty geeky. (There
really isn't all that big a difference between fantasy football and Dungeons & Dragons.)
Sports was probably just his in to send you a message. If you had said you liked, say, video games, he would have jumped on that and started talking about Rock Band 3 or the Scott Pilgrim video game or whatever. He just needed an excuse to strike up another conversation. The fact that he segued into other topics shows that he's interested in getting to know you and not just talking about how Brett Favre is...going..to..the Twins? Is that football? Does he play the round ball or the spherical ball? Or the "bases ball"? Polo! He's a polo guy, right? Anyone?? Little help?
If he keeps bringing up sports, tell him that you aren't that big of a fan and just wanted to get to know him. Chances are, he'll be flattered. Definitely show interest if that's your thing, but don't feel like you have to pretend to know who Tony Parker is outside of being Eva Longoria's husband. (That's a real guy, right? Tony Parker? Plays basketball, or curling or something?)

Love the dig at Favre! I'm already sick of the news coverage.
Awesome response NN.
The sports chatter definitely comes in handy for the pre-sex talk anyway...like "making sure the catcher's glove is on tight when you round 3rd for home base".....
or "protecting the goal when you're Gretzky is shooting from center ice"....
or "the best offense is a good defense"...ya know, stuff like that. ;)
