I hate to step on the toes of the Wise-Ass, but...nope. He won't notice. Assume, when it comes to this stuff, that the male skull is made of brick. He probably thinks you're only interested in being his friend and, fair warning, he is going to be really surprised you want more. Again, male skull...brick.
You may not want to say it, but it's either say it or keep pining. He is not going to get the message unless you deliver it to him, in person, and in words of two or fewer syllables. You might try grabbing him by the lapels and shaking for emphasis, or possibly tackling him while naked. But there's still going to be talking involved at some point.
Sure, you might lose your friend, but it beats pining away for somebody who might not be interested. Lay it out for him, and if it's not what he wants, move on. Nobody should have "Nobody Knows It But Me" as their theme song, not least because man, Babyface was terrible.

tell him! guys don't always read into things like many females do. actions DO speak louder than words, but he may not be noticing the way he should. and words always help the message hit home.
OMG I just told my best guy friend that I liked him. It's like he doesn't get it still, all he cares about is that we're still friends. I'm not sure if he likes me or what because he was like "I don't think I'm good enough for you" and "I don't want to ruin our friendship by messing up too soon if we went out that you wouldn't want to be friends with me again" blah blah blah.
I do feel better though after telling him, I think you should take the leap. I took it and it didn't end up well for me but, maybe it will for you.

Sorry, but if you're that close and he's still dating other girls, he's not interested. At all. I know that sounds awfully harsh, but I would seriously bet my life on this. I'm sure he likes you acting as a reliable emotional outlet, and you probably provide a nice boost to his ego...but if he wanted something more he would have gone for it by now.

I'm the chicks with a great boyfriend, and my friend is there to "listen and comfort me" when my great boyfriend's been a human and made a mistake. I've only realised this week what's going on, wondering why he keeps touching and hugging me.

I'm sorry to say, but if he did fancy you, I think he would have asked you out already. You say he's been dating - he's had a chance to ask you out, yet he didn't. Why not? The answer seems obvious: he's not that into you.
