Is it odd of me to be concerned that my boyfriend's favorite book is Catcher in the Rye (and only references that one book...he hasn't read anything else by Salinger)? I don't believe he's going to shoot John Lennon or anything.

Well, I'm not concerned about that either, considering we recently celebrated the 29th anniversary of John Lennon's death. But I assume you are being metaphorical. (I hope you're being metaphorical.)

No, you shouldn't be concerned at all. Catcher in the Rye is a lot of people's favorite book, particularly if they're between the ages of 13 and 21. And it's also the only Salinger book that a lot people read, despite the fact that Franny and Zooey and Nine Stories are just as good if not better. I went through a phase of loving Catcher in the Rye and idolizing Holden Caulfield. Then I turned 13 and discovered girls.

Ghostbusters is one of my favorite movies and I'm not incurring the wrath of the EPA by building an ectoplasmic containment unit in my basement. Fiction is fiction, even something with the baggage of Catcher in the Rye. (Though I would argue that, say, The Matrix or Call of Duty has far more influence on the kids these days.) Let him go through his Catcher in the Rye phase. Now if he's walking around in a hunting cap all the time while going on and on about "phonies" maybe you should be concerned.

On a related note, can you believe that J.D. Salinger is still alive? And that he remains a recluse in this day and age? Also, I'm shocked no one has made a Catcher in the Rye movie. Once Salinger croaks, it's only a matter of time before we see Catcher in the Rye: The Holden Chronicles starring Taylor Lautner.

Nobody's made a movie about Catcher in the Rye because Salinger refuses to give up the rights to anyone.

And yes I know Wikipedia is not the most reliable of sources but it would explain a few things.

"Igby Goes Down" has elements of Catcher in the Rye, but it's not a direct adaptation of it.

I remember reading a long while back that Steven Spielberg and Leonardo DiCaprio wanted to make it but Salinger wouldn't give up the rights. But once he's dead all bets are off, and they'll cast Michael Cera or something.

the whole time holden complains about how much he hates movies and what a sellout DB is for writing them. granted, he complains about most things, but still. there's anti-movie stuff going on in a lot of salinger's work. i'd feel bad if they wound up adapting it when he died. i just pictured hazy flashbacks of miley cyrus as jane gallagher and threw up a little.

i'd also like to say that the link to franny and zooey made me so happy! the dialogue is so well-crafted and the details are so real, you might as well be watching a movie. everybody read it!

I read that book when I was 14. I'm 19 now, and it's still one of my favorite reads. Ironically, The Beatles is one of my favorite bands. xD

Nick Nadel

You're never too young (or old) to love the Beatles.

I still love Catcher In The Rye. Luckily I had already discovered girls when I read it. I never shot anyone, either.

I agree, some day soon my NH's most reclusive resident will kick the bucket and his children will finally sell the rights for a film version, and it will suck. *sigh*

The Catcher In The Rye is a great book and captures teen angst like none other. I still relate to certain aspects of Holden's character to this day: phoneys suck, I don't trust a lot of adults, and morons hate it when you call them morons.

Nick Nadel

Agree with everyone. Catcher is still a great, relevant book that I think all teenagers should read.

Unlike, say, Grapes of Wrath. I'm falling asleep right now just thinking about that one. I kid, I kid. (No, really, that book is soooo boring. The old days were hard, I get it. Get to California already!)

Just have to say that unlike most people, I hated Catcher in the Rye. Thought Holden was a self-absorbed little douchebag and didn't care what happened to him. Much preferred I Am The Cheese or The Boy Who Could Make Himself Disappear.

I think I was only able to get through a few chapters of that book, I agree with Faburobin... the character seemed really douchey and I just couldn't get into it. However so many people I know (who are not douchebags) love the book, so I might try and force myself to finish it.
