Uh, if the guy's really into Pokemon, he might be cool with it. (You aren't doing this in public, right?) Otherwise, he might be a little weirded out by you comparing him to cutesy fighting cartoon creatures.
Every couple does the pet name thing, even it's just "sweetie" or "baby." I'm sure you aren't the first person to use Pokemon characters, but that is definitely creative. If it's meant as a term of endearment, go for it. The right guy will find it adorable, particularly if he digs Pokemon or Japanese anime in general.
With a new guy who doesn't share your love of Ash, Pikachu, Team Rocket, and the rest, perhaps you could test the waters with some pet names that aren't from video games and cartoons. Make sure he likes pet names before you start getting creative. Where they come from won't matter if pet names aren't his thing. (If he bristles at "honey," chances are he won't be down with you referring to him by the name of a psychic duck.)
Pet names should come naturally, and mean something to you and your guy. If you're using Pokemon names, and he's not into that sort of thing, then you're just doing it for yourself. Make sure you're doing it because you love him, and not Pokemon. (I mean, I love Lost, but if I started calling my girlfriend "Hurley" or "Kate" I think she'd get pretty annoyed after a while.) Also, maybe pick one name. The whole changing pet names thing makes me think you just like saying the names of Pokemon characters.
Oh, and don't call him Snorlax. All that dude does is sleep and eat. He might take offense to that one.
Do you have any pet names for your guy? Or do you find them cheesy?

I'm not too much of a fan of using pokemon nicknames, I do indeed enjoy the show. (James from Team Rocket is my fav character)
and I agree with Nick. If he's okay with it, then it's okay. If not, then stop.
"Do you have any pet names for your guy?"
Pet names for my man? Yeah, there's a lot. He told me that he liked it when I called him 'sunshine' and 'mon petit chou'. I also call him Batman and he seems to enjoy that as well. Who wouldn't?
Back to the pokemon nicknames: A male friend of my that happens to be obsessed with pokemon and often gives his friends nicknames that go along with the pokemon that they remind him of. He calls him self Maunter (Matt, Haunter) his best friend is Mikarmander (Mike, Charmander) a close female friend is called Kaylachu (Kayla, Pikachu) and I'm called Amanbra.. (Amanda, Abra) which he teases me about 'cause the spelling looks like 'a man bra'..
Oddly enough, he took an online quiz and it came out as Snorlax X|
And I'm very pleased with this answer. I didn't know what to expect. Whole new perspective now.
Stick with what I like, but don't force anything.... Well, if what I said doesn't make sense on the comp, it made sense in my head.
Thanks again =3
Oddly enough, my FWB calls me "Caterpie", then again, my name is Cat and I suppose it's a decent intuitive leap.
It took me a while to forgive him for calling me such a useless pokemon though.
It's all about Vaporeon!!!
Pokemon really
I've caught myself calling him "puppy", which is weird, since we're both cat people. When I'm feeling especially romantic, I'll call him Moon, because Jonathan Coulton's "I'm Your Moon" is "our song".
Funny thing is, My man sees himself as Entei, and I see myself as Mewtwo. :3 So we both do it :D
