While it might be nervewracking, there really is no better way to determine if a guy is in a relationship than by asking. Mostly because he's either going to have to tell the truth or lie. The fact that you're "getting to know him" should imply that he isn't in a relationship since why in the the world would he be open to new friends if he's in a relationship?
I would say that there are a lot of signs that can tell you if he's in a relationship or not, but most, if not all are the same signs that he's just not that into you. Which, of course, would be the case if he was in a relationship he wanted to keep going.
If he doesn't return your phone calls and only texts you or only comes to see you at your place, etc. Those are all things to look for. Any guy with a girlfriend won't have the time (unless his girlfriend is long distance) to keep up appearances for very long. And if he's only out to get into your jeans you'll know pretty quickly.
But the main bullet point is this, asking if a man has a girlfriend should be one of the first questions you ask BEFORE he even gets your phone number or your BBM pin or you all "bump" cell phones or anything.
Oh, and you can also just check Facebook like any other self-respecting citizen would do.
