Sure. It really depends on how friendly you are on a normal basis. Remember that the holidays brings up all kinds of emotions -- stress, nostalgia, etc. So tread carefully.
Maybe he's the kind of ex where you include him on your generic, not-too-personal holiday cards. Maybe you post "happy holidays!" on his Facebook page. Or perhaps he's included in a mass "happy new year!" next that you send out while tipsy at midnight. It really depends on how you interact during the rest of the year. Just avoid anything that could potentially turn awkward. For instance, if you're out on a New Year's Eve date, maybe don't duck into the ladies room to call him or get into a texting back-and-forth. If you talk on the phone, be wary of the conversation turning nostalgic ("remember that new year's eve we spent together watching fireworks on your roof?") if you think that will lead to weirdness or old feelings coming back. Basically treat him or her as you would a friend on the holidays.
Also, there's nothing that says you have to contact an ex on the holidays, even if they are a friend. Particularly if you're in a relationship where that would be awkward. There's enough drama around the holidays without your boyfriend asking why you're texting your ex at the family Hanukkah dinner.
