Cut him loose for good.
If he's not going to put the effort in, and nothing you do is good enough for him, well, then why should you stick around? He's being a jerk. Just cut him out of your life and move on; he's not worth it.

Basically your ex wants the cake and eat it too. He wants all the perks of a girlfriend(sex, company, someone to stroke his ego, etc) without any of the work involved (commitment of his time, monogamy, etc). He wants to smash and hang out every once and a while AND still sleep with other girls on the side. You deserve better than being one of the many girls in his rotations
That's no bueno, kick this dude to the curb and find a guy who really wants to be with you.
Couldn't have said it better. You hit everything right on the head!
I think we've all been in a similar situation at one time or another, and yeah, nothing good can come out of it. After getting fucked over a time or two, I now REFUSE to let guys string me along like that. These days, you can either claim me as your own, or I'll find someone else who will. Either way, I win :)
I am currently in this situation as well... This is very helpful! Thank you!
Ditch the bitch!
Cut him off, you deserve better.
Period.
I am in a similar situation. He pretty much only made effort when it directly benefitted him after the first 6 months or so...then I found out he cheated on me. He claimed to be so sorry and he just slipped up and would start proving to me how much he loved me by giving it everything he's got...months have gone by and no change. Needless to say he's on the chopping block and I've about had it with my patience with him. I wish I would of left when I first broke up with him instead of falling back into it, thinking he'd actually change...
