Agreed. Some of the best gifts I've ever received were handmade with love. They cost nothing, or were under $10. I think you should feel free to make him something, and it would be nice if he reciprocated and made you something. Even if it's just a card, or a mix CD. Money shouldn't be an issue-- it's nice to show you care and want to give the person you're with something on Valentine's Day.
Yes, you've only been official for a month. But you've been hooking up for five months. Seems the least he could do is make you something. He could draw a comic for you. Assemble all your recent photos together into a little scrapbook. Finally learn iMovie and edit together clips from your favorite romantic comedies. Even if you both decide not to do V-Day gifts, he could still make you breakfast or give you a homemade gift card for a backrub and a romantic dinner at home. Anything. Like that Jennifer Lopez song said, "Effort don't cost a thing." (Or was that love? Anyway, you get the point...)
And, yes, it is cheesy that we have to be romantic one day a year when we could just be romantic the other 364 days. But, whatever. He should just do it. Be a nice guy for once, guys out there. Even if you're dirt poor, make her something nice this Valentine's, or do something, anything, nice for her. She might say she doesn't care, but she does.
My feeling is that if you are with someone on Valentine's Day, whether you've been married 40 years or been dating for only 40 days, you should do something nice for them. Why not? Because you don't believe in the holiday? "It's a Hallmark holiday, blah, blah, blah." Yawn. Believing in Valentine's Day is the new not believing in Valentine's Day. Do it up!

As somebody who's never actually had a Valentine, I would suggest that you do something, anything. It doesn't have to cost money, just make a point to make the day special for each other. Don't do it because it's expected, but do it because you love to make each other smile.
I heart you :)
that was a really good point. its pretty dumb to avoid doing something sweet for someone you care about just because you dislike the holiday/consumerism (just like everybody else).
I would also point out that its not always best to just assume he will get you a gift. that sort of smacks of entitlement, especially considering how many people DO have strong feelings about the holiday, and can leave a bad taste in everyones mouth on valentines. i recommend suggesting to him that you each get/make something for each other that costs under ten dollars. that way he isn't blindsided and you arent left feeling disappointed. :)
or just ask the guy to get you something simple like flowers. boys like to know what you want. it makes them happy to get it for you most of the time, and stressing about figuring it out makes them not happy.
I have to say that for the last couple of hours i have been hooked by the impressive posts on this blog. Keep up the good work.
