He's not being too shallow at all. Bad breath is not like an extra long toe nail. I'm pretty sure that countries have fallen because of bad breath. Though that could be blamed on my public school education.
Anyway, shallow issue are things like sneezing too much, or thinking somebody is not as pretty because her breasts aren't big enough. Halitosis - the medical condition you'd like him to be aware of - is not something that is easy to just accept. You have to talk to somebody and kiss somebody. Have YOU ever dated somebody with ridiculously hot breath? It's no walk in the park. Everybody deserves love but I can't fault your guy for knowing that he can't handle stankmouth.
In fact, not only do I think he's not shallow, I think you're unrealistic and are only questioning this because you've also not been placed in a situation with somebody who's mouth could light a fire. Bad breath can ruin the attraction to anybody. It just does. Is it a problem that can be remedied, sure. But what if the person with the bad mouth can't seem to get it right? Here's the other piece, I doubt it would ever even get to the point that you'd be recommending solutions. When people have unfortunate breath, others get away from it because it permeates and lingers. No cranberries.
So no, he's not being shallow, he's just knowing his limitations.
It was written.
