I guess that depends on if you think the ends justify the means. Not sure if that fits here perfectly so let me try a different approach.
Yes, it was all for naught. But during the time you were communicating you had some happiness and entertainment. I know that sounds like a ridiculous silver lining but its pretty much all you have here. The entire time you were flirting and texting (but remarkably not spending any physical time together) he was doing the same with somebody else who I can only presume he WAS spending actual time with.
He enjoyed your "company" but he had a woman he was focused on and with whom he decided to make things official. I guess the assumption here was that you all were exclusively doing such things. Did you ever think to ask him if he was seeing anybody else? My guess is you just assumed that he thought you were such the bee's knees that he wouldn't think of doing that.
This is a common but terrible assumption that women make: "I'm the only one that matters." Until you become official or agree to exclusively date, there's a good chance that he's got some other women jockeying for position too. That's the same assumption I'd make of a woman I was dealing with.
So while it unfortunately (and rightly) caught you by surprise, you'll just have to chalk this one up as a learning experience and look for somebody to give you what he did and more.
This totally just happened to me! He randomly asked me out via facebook, but because of conflicting work schedules we ended up postponing the date. The week we were due to have a first date, I find out seven hours after his last text that he's in a relationship. I think what's pretty offensive, though, is the fact his poor girlfriend had no idea about me either! If he lacks the courage to tell you face to face, he's not someone you want to date anyway.
This didn't happen to you. Your situation is totally different. Hers is - she met some guy, then spent a month texting and talking to him on the phone. Meanwhile, he met someone else, who in addition to texting and talking to him made the smart decision to actually date him.
Your case, you meet some random person on fb who has a gf who decides a few hours before your date that he can't go through with cheating on his gf.

This, unfortunately, happens often. Guys (and many girls as well) like to hedge their bets. They want to make sure they have a back-up for if the girl they're seriously pursuing doesn't work out. You were the back-up this time.
