So my fiance proposed but is a little tight on money for a while. So my question is why did he get mad when I asked if I could buy my own ring?

He wants to buy you a ring and do the traditional thing. Being tight on money makes him feel stressed and like he won't be able to provide and help out in the marriage. He probably feels under a lot of pressure. Perhaps his parents are telling him he has to save for a ring. And of course every guy feels like they have to follow the traditional "three months salary" rule and buy the nicest ring possible. Even if you say you don't want a fancy ring, there's pressure from society, family and tradition that makes guys feel like they have to buy her the ring of her dreams. You offering to buy a ring makes him feel like less of a man or less of a provider. Maybe he's worried what people will think. Getting mad doesn't help, but he obviously feels very passionate about buying you a ring himself.

So give him some time to save and get you the ring. If it drags on and on, then you could offer help or suggest a cheaper ring. Let him know that marrying him is more important than the ring. But if it's important to him to buy you a ring, give him a chance to..

I have a suggestion... what about a cool vintage ring from an antique shop or flea market? You could pick out something together and I bet you could find something less expensive. It depends on what you'd want though. You could also offer to help out if you have a stone you'd like to use - it's less expensive to buy a setting without a diamond. That's what we did. I had a diamond from a piece of jewelry that belonged to my grandmother so I asked if we could use that and he was fine with it.

Thank you both so much. I guess my new question is should I apologize for upsetting him?

Another idea if you are less traditional is to get something other than a diamond like your birth stone. Many other stones are less expensive than diamonds and look just as good.
