The Cure vs The Smiths?

Wow, that is a tough one. You might as well have asked me if I prefer air or water.

Well, if I had a gun to my head (I don't know why someone would go to such extreme measures to make me decide which British post-punk band is my favorite), I guess I'd say The Cure. Mostly because Disintegration would be one of my desert island albums (yes, my desert island would be kind of depressing) and there isn't any one Smiths album that I like as much outside of maybe The Queen Is Dead. I tend to like individual Smiths songs more than their handful of albums.

Disintegration is great top-to-bottom ("Love Song," "Prayers for Rain," "Pictures of You"), and The Cure have a vaster discography that ranged from their early post-punk/Goth rock stuff to the more poppier side with songs like "Just Like Heaven" and "Friday I'm in Love." The Smiths are great, but they never really evolved since they broke up after only four albums. Also, I liked The Cure growing up, whereas The Smiths I discovered in college like everyone else with a liberal arts degree.

But I love The Smiths. And they have the best song titles! "William It Was Really Nothing." "Pretty Girls Make Graves" (the name of another excellent band). "Bigmouth Strikes Again." "Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before" and its sister song "The Joke Isn't Funny Anymore."  Use one of their titles in your next love e-mail/break-up text. There's a title for pretty much anything you need. So many great songs. And I like Morrissey solo. (Well, most of it.) I would have the coolest music taste if the year was currently 1985.

Let's play this game with other artists!

Beatles Vs. Rolling Stones
- Beatles

Fleetwood Mac Vs. The Eagles - Fleetwood Mac

Michael Jackson Vs. Prince
- Michael Jackson

Madonna Vs. Lady Gaga
- Madonna

U2 Vs. Coldplay - Coldplay.

Nirvana Vs. Pearl Jam -
Nirvana

New Kids on the Block Vs. N*Sync
- New Kids

Wu-Tang Clan Vs. Public Enemy - Wu-Tang

The Strokes Vs. White Stripes - White Stripes

Kanye West Vs. Jay-Z - Kanye, but that one is also tough

Arcade Fire Vs. Radiohead - Arcade Fire. Sorry, Radiohead. That one was also tough.

Katy Perry Vs. Ke$ha - You kind of lose either way with this one.

Now tell me your picks.

THE CURE!!!! all the way. I'm the exact same way, The Smiths are good but they don't go straight to my heart like The Cure does.

Hey CG, Bob Dylan or Tom Waits?

Arcade Fire. Over Radiohead. Arcade Fire over RADIOHEAD. ARCADE FIRE OVER RADIOHEAD.

I cannot believe I am reading these words. Heresy, men, heresy.

Yeah, that was a tough one. But I don't love the last couple Radiohead albums. (Well, I liked most of In Rainbows. But the new one is booooring.) And I love every Arcade Fire album. But no one can ever top early Radiohead. I'm sure I'll change my mind on this one in six months.
