It's a beverage, popular in Spain and Mexico, usually made with rice, milk, cinnamon, and sometimes vanilla. Usually served cold, but I've also seen it served warm. It's very sweet and delicious. Not to be confused with Mexican hot chocolate, which is often spicy and, when made correctly, tastes like cocoa from God's private stash.
It's also the name of the first track on the new Vampire Weekend album, which is also pretty great even though it sounds identical to their last album. (I like the video for "Cousins.") Is that what prompted the question? The line in the song, "In December/drinking horchata"? Or did a guy ask you over for some nice horchata and empanadas?
Warm horchata is a nice winter-y beverage. You know what I like? Caramel hot chocolate with whipped cream. (My girlfriend makes nice hot chocolate.) Also anything in the cider category. Warm apple cider, apple raspberry cider. Making warm beverages on a snowy night can be romantic.
Great, now I want empanadas and horchata. I also like that Mexican soda, Jarrito. That's good stuff. Also, Mexican Coke, with real sugar. Hard to find in the U.S., but worth it.
I'm thinking we need to start a FoodSpeak soon...

"in december, drinking horchata. i looked psychotic in a balaclava..."
Oooh Nick I love it when you ramble on aimlessly promting my husband to be annoyed with "hey babe!Dontcha want some rasberry cider??" Which in girls speak means "Babe I want cider & since its cold out & I'm clearly "kidnapping" material, can you go get ME some cider stuff??" complete with pouty face of course!!aaaaaannnnndddd SCORE!!HE'S NOW ON A CIDER MISSION!!!YAY ME! I should put down the laptop now.
next question...whats a balaclava and a masada?
Balaclava is a ski mask, basically. Usually worn by the military, or sometimes by terrorists. It's kind of scary looking, so, yeah, you might look psychotic wearing one. Masada is an ancient palace in Israel, very sacred in Jewish culture. It was King Herod's palace at one time. I like how they rhyme "horchata" with "Masada."
I love how this turned into LyricSpeak. Got anymore??
Well...wearing a balaclava might not be THAT psychotic if it was actually December and it was really, really cold lol
The person might be referring to Baklava, since we have a food theme happening here. Baklava is a pastry from the Middle East... it has nuts and honey inside layers of phyllo dough. It's honestly too rich for me. I say eat one piece with 3 cups of water.
Maybe they meant "masala" as well?
Oh man, I want some, too, now!
Horchata is an amazing drink! I love it on a hot summer day!!!!
Mexican hot chocolate...mmm, muy delicioso. Best antidote for the winter blues!
i think barrilitos tastes better than jarritos
:)
FoodSpeak.com, Yum!
I like Chai with milk and brown sugar, myself. It took me a few attemps to perfect the recipe according to my own tastes, but now I can make a batch and spend a cold winter afternoon in, reading a book and drinking Chai. Mmm, I love winter...
Ahh such an awesome drink, try it!!!
You haven't lived if you haven't tasted strawberry horchata. And non-carbonated chaparritas. All sodas in Mexico use real sugar, there is a law for that.
Whatever it is, I think I want some now.
horchatashould actually be made with tiger nuts ad served icy....i live in spain....def get it from a horchata shop - not out of a carton or can.....

I wanted to thank you for the article -- I actually liked it! Usually, I don't give remarks, but I did it given that I have a bug: when the web page is totally loaded, the left side is scrambled. Everything is in black and green! How come?
