Much like with everything sex related, there is no protocol. What's good for one person might suck for another. Pun intended. You just have to figure it out amongst the two of you. Mayhaps you like eye contact as it helps you feel more connected. Maybe your partner gets weirded out by it.
Though, I tend to think people who get weirded out by eye contact during sex are either extremely shy or very uncomfortable with sex and/or their bodies and nudity, etc. Folks who are trying to come out of their shell. I mean they're having sex but perhaps they're not fully comfy with themselves and their sexuality. That's a little armchair psychology so pay it no mind.
Either way, you just have to get in there and see what works for the two of y'all. You'll know fairly quickly how awkward it is...if it even is at all. Some people like talking. Some folks hate it. Some like spanking and hair pulling. Some think that's icky. You just really never know until you get to smanging.
Here's a word of advice. Don't overthink sex. Smanging (sex) should be fun and you kind of learn on the go. Sometimes you just have to let it come to you (pun) and enjoy the ride (again, pun).
