Like everything else involving sex, it depends on one's tastes. Realistically speaking, a lot of people can't make eye contact during sex because their eyes are involuntarily closed: just the way it works out. But it can be incredibly hot for some people and terrifying for others.
So, ask. If he's into it, he's into it. If he's hesitant, don't bother: better to not find out if something is awkward or not.
