First of all, be safe: keep a spare key where you can't lose it and make sure you both know where it is. Also, only do this with somebody you absolutely trust, and yes, that's a two-way street: some people have issues.
Now, handcuffs, but no headboard. There are a lot of ways to do this, but they all boil down to the same thing: tie a rope, a twisted sheet, or something else to the frame and loop it around so it's at the top of the bed. Some clothesline from a hardware store should do it. Tie that to the middle of the chain on the cuffs and you're good to go.
Alternately, push your bed towards something he can be handcuffed to, and use that. Or just use the clothesline.
Again, be safe: know what you're doing, establish a safe word, and always do this only with people you trust.
You can buy underbed restraints! They go underneath your mattress so you don't need anything to hook onto.
Alternatively you could try being handcuffed together, that can get pretty sexy.
Oh! And there's sets you can use with doors that you just clip over the top. Although restraint sets can get a bit pricey I think they're worth it for the comfort factor, because some handcuffs can really dig in and leave nasty red marks! Silk ties are good too, they feel much nicer on your skin as well.
When talking dirty don't get too embarrassed by it! Just relax, maybe start by telling him what you want and then go from there. And you don't have to go into that whole 'I'm a dirty whore' type stuff if you don't feel comfortable saying it so don't feel pressured!
My guy and I don't have a headboard either, so I'll just tie his hands up (or visa versa) with his arms above his head. Sure, sometimes he'll try to bring them down out of natural instinct, but then I just push them back above his head which in itself is kinda sexy and hot to do. This is obviously not as intense as full on hand cuff restraint, but it works for us because once the tied up foreplay is done, he (or I) can easily take off the tie and go at it like normal.
Use nothing :) Use socks! My husband plays in minor leagues and we had nothing to use..so I used his baseball socks and had his hands/arms above his head and telling him in a "controlling/demanding" voice to keep them there..is enough to get things heated. To make it funner, I threw on one of his jersey's with heels..ya, and that's all she wrote!

Seconding the under-bed restraints. My bf and I bought a thing that goes under the mattress and has adjustable wrist and ankle cuffs that you can pull out when and where you want them. The cuffs are Velcro, so they're comfortable and easy to undo quickly if necessary. Roughly $60, and makes for some seriously hot scenes. Oh, and you can just hide the cuffs under the mattress if you're afraid of someone else (a child, a guest) seeing them.
Another way to work it is to handcuff or tie (user preference) her wrists to ankles( ie left wrist to left ankle and right wrist to right ankle. Pretty fun if you ask me..
