Well, glad you asked. I was also confused about this campaign for men to grow out their mustaches until I came across this site called Movember. And then whammo, there it was.
During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men's faces, in the US and around the world. With their Mo's, these men raise vital funds and awareness for men's health, specifically prostate cancer and other cancers that affect men.
So you see, it's not intended to piss off girlfriends, its intended to make sure that girlfriends have men in their lives forever. Think about it like this, all through October, the nation turned pink. In the NFL, men were wearing pink left and right in attempts to raise awareness for Breast Cancer awareness.
Well this is a similar construct. It's men growing out their 'staches in hopes of raising a similar awareness.
Look at you, initially pissed and now you learned somebody. Support the cause and help your man groom his mustache.
