Well, I could be cheesy and say my girlfriend, but that isn't true. My girlfriend is great, but it dawned on me that I've blogged for this site for two years and never once discussed my actual best friend. (Sorry, person I won't name to protect your privacy! Remember that inside joke we have? Airplane seats, right?? Yeah, I know!) So pull up a chair dear readers, or a take a knee, because I am about to tell you the story of how I met my best friend.
The year was 1990. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ruled the box office. MC Hammer let everyone know that they should under no circumstances "touch this." The economy wasn't great, and the U.S. had just entered into a war in Iraq. It was a lot like now, only with more flannel. And I was a nerdy 7th grader entering into a new school in a new city.
During the first week or so of school, we had a class project (which our teacher adorably called "Me-ology") where we had to create a poster all about ourselves and our interests. The idea was that we would read each others' posters and start to make friends. So one day during class I'm perusing the posters and come across one written by a classmate whom we'll call "Ted." One of the assignments for the poster was to describe your perfect day, and Ted's perfect day basically involved going to the comic book store, playing Dungeons & Dragons and shopping for G.I. Joe and Transformers toys. Well, needless to say, I was intrigued. I sat down next to Ted before class and made my move.
"So, Ted," I said. "You like comics?"
"Uh, yeah," Ted said, somewhat reluctantly. (Ted would later tell me that he initially had that "I don't need new friends, I have my old friends" mentality that a lot of kids have when they start at a new school.)
"That's cool," I said. (We proceed to talk about comics until class starts.)
And thus, the first seeds of a nerdbromance that is still strong 21 years later were planted. (The friendship would be further cemented on an overnight class trip that same semester where we ignored our fellow classmates and--let's be honest here-- girls to discuss the finer points of the G.I. Joe comic book and TV series.)
So how did you meet your best friend?
In high school. We weren’t BFs then, but we are 30 years later.
I met my best friend in High School, and initially I could stand him. I thought he was a serious jock type with a huge opinion of ... well, everything, but mostly himself. But then I got to know him better and he grew on me like a fungus. I learned that he's fiercely loyal and protective of friends and his big talk was downright hilarious if you actually bothered to listen - sprinkled with sarcasm and self-deprecating humor. He's still a bit of a jock (way into Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Grappling & MMA), but it turned out that he was a huge comic book, D&D and computer nerd as well.
grade 7. we were in the same year and even took the same bus. one day i got on the bus and sat near her, holding a Harry Potter book. she noticed it and we got to talking :) 10 years and counting...
It was 9 years ago. I didnt realize he was my best friend until I woke up one morning and his little head was resting on the pillow next to mine, staring at me, waiting for me to get up and have puppy play time. To this day he is loyal, a good listener, knows I'm always right even if he disagrees, is understanding, caring, protective, funny, playful, and the best dog a girl could ask for.
2 best friends:
9th grade, martial arts class in our neighborhood. we were friends, not close. she left to get surgery, then 6 months later i run into her on the street and we spend an hour throwing snowballs at cars. best friendship born.
1993. two married couples go camping.on that trip, both women reveal that they are 2 months pregnant. 2 baby girls are born 5 days apart. preschool together but never the same school after that. best friends to this day
also 2 besties.
One I've known all my life. We've discovered we have a special affinity for movies, movies and movies. I've literally known her since I was in diapers, and I imagine we high-fived whilst in our mothers bellies at one point.
the other, I met in high school. I was awkward as hell, but when one girl asked me to answer her survey for a class project i just said why the hell not and answered it honestly. She approached me later saying my answers were funny. One thing led to another and our favorite past time is to drink cosmos and blab to one another

Love these stories! Thanks for sharing, everyone.
1994. I was a sophomore in college, and a freshman on my floor was from a neighboring high school to my alma mater, so I thought I'd try to strike up a friendship. Her roommate (I'll call her Nicole) was super quiet, and kind of awkward. The girl from the neighboring school went home the same weekend as my roommate, so I went over and talked to Nicole, asking her if she'd like to split a pizza. We ended up spending the night bonding over the misery known as guys (we both had unrequited crushes), watching Disney movies and laughing over our uncanny ability to quote the exact same line at the exact same time. After a Mountain Dew binge that resulted in us talking until 4AM a few weeks later, she deemed me "Goofy", to which I responded "If I'm Goofy, then you're Daffy", and we've been BFFs ever since.
People are usually freaked out by our ability to do the same things. That school year, we ended up wearing nearly identical outfits every day for a solid week without planning it ahead of time. If one has an injury (like, for example, a sprained ankle) the other will have an unexplained pain in the same spot. Heck, we've even dated 2 of the same guys!
We don't live anywhere near each other anymore, but she's still the one person I can count on.
I met my best friend my freshman year of college. We were in the same theater class and she had just streaked her hair blue and orange and I hadn't yet hit a level of confidence that allowed me to even consider that. I decided that we needed to be friends. From the moment that she spilled a can of olives in my dorm room and it smelled like that for a week, we've been best friends. She's been there for me through everything and even though most of the time we've been thousands of miles apart, we've never lost touch.
I`m blessed with several amzing close friends but my best friend is from 6th grade: 34 years ago. Thus, the `Nickel Story`! I was new to the school and neighborhood, starting two weeks late. All the friendship clicks had already been established, so I was a loner for the first few weeks of school, a goody two shoes geek no one talked to. She and another girl sat across from me, and they were the hardened rebels of our 6th grade class. Made fun of me any chance they got & were quite mean. One day my mom accidentally gave me five cents too much for lunch. It just so happened she announced angrily at our table she happened to be short a nickel that day. In spite of my intimadtion by them, I meekly offered her my extra nickel. That was the begininng of a friendship that has seen each other through many tears and much laughter, broken marraiges, deaths, abuse and long distance and even today we are like those lost little girls with love and widome to spare xo
Met my best friend from high school during freshman year. My biology teacher was for lack of a better word, an idiot, and would always call me as Martha as my first name. My last name is close to Martha, but I constantly constantly had to correct him that while it's not my first name, it's also not my last. So I mumbled something like "Martha's a horrible name, who'd name their kid that anyways...?" and Angela turned around and said her grandmother named her mom that. Well I just about died but she laughed it off and we became the best of friends.
Then my other best friend Heather and I met when I was in Florida working for Disney. A coworker said he couldn't get over how much alike we were (we hadn't met yet at the time). Once we met we instantly hit it off and have been close ever since. I used to hate when people called their friends their "twin" but I definitely have a twin now!! We are alike in so many ways and always laugh when we are together! :)
So glad I found my best friends!
I was in a musical production of Tom Sawyer. I was knew to the company and there was a girl who was an old pro! I use to follow her moves and watch her for what i needed to do. We were not super close, but then a few shows went by, beauty and the beast and peter pan. In Peter Pan I did not know anyone else so I stuck to her side. She became a mentor and leader for me, then as we got closer I became the same for her and thus the closest friendship I have ever had was born.
My best guy friend, same Tom Sawyer show, we were "married" in the show and ever since then he has been my "husband" and my closest guy friend, and the man I pray to God I actually marry someday.
