Why do guys like to pick girls up (literally)? I'm not a small woman, but this happens a lot with guys I date.

Guys pick up girls because it's a remnant of their fourth grade brain they can't quite shake.  It's cave man short hand for, "Me like you. Me strong. Me want to show you me like you and me strong." It's really quite unique, as it is one of the only physical acts that works equally well at the disco's in Mykonos, Greece; the bars outside Lubbock, Texas; and Mrs. Havermeyers fourth grade lunch recess.

As long as a man is fairly confident he can lift you without shattering a vertebrae or pissing himself, he will at some point in your courting lift you up. It's effective in stating interest in a gal without having to kiss. And it's an act that can be played down or off if it's not received well.

You can't kiss a girl and say "Ha ha ha I was only joking, dummy" but you can put a girl back on her feet and say "Relax, I was only kidding."
So in this regard it's a very safe, yet intimate activity. i.e. the risks are low (for men) but the rewards can be high.

Keep in mind, I'm not saying that it's a great way to communicate feelings for someone. It is invasive, presumptuous and slightly moronic. But the question is why is it done, not why don't men find more subtle ways to express their attraction and intrerest in me?

boyfriend airlift hugs are the best.

I hate this! I'm not small either and I'm always afraid he's misjudged my size, or he'll think less of me when he feels how heavy I am.

nikitamaagel

HA! i totally agree! I'm heavier than I look and I always feel so self conscious when a guy picks me up! The whole time I keep telling them: "i'm too heavy, you're gonna break your back"... Somehow they see that as more incentive to keep doing it.

user-pic

ugh i know that one! it's like they think your calling them weak and they have to prove them selves! no dummy I'm really just trying to save your back, I'm not a light weight. I've been told i don't know how many times i don't look my weight.

It makes me feel really self consious too. same thing when they insist you sit on their laps. its cute, but stressful.

user-pic

for me its not that I'm trying to prove my strength, but I'd feel SO terrible lifting my girl up...AND SETTING HER RIGHT THE FUCK DOWN!

Oh wow! Thanks for asking this question. I'm very petite. I get picked up (literally) by some semi-drunk acquaintance at almost every party I go to! I always wonder why! I hate it! I feel so helpless and disrespected every time it happens.

user-pic

I'm not small. So when a guy is strong enough to pick me up that means he can pull my ass out of a burning building. He's a keeper.

user-pic

i actually love it when guys pick me up!
...but im petite so mb i just cant relate to the whole selfconciousness thing;
either way, i dont mind getting pivked up

user-pic

I'm not petite either but a big, solid, athletic, hourglass. I'm 5'6" and hover around 147-150. My boyfriend always wants to pick me up! I mean constantly. I'm terrified that he has misjudged my weight. Is 150 too heavy to pick up?!? I want to lose 15 pounds but so far that isn't happening. :)

user-pic

I'm not close to being petite (5'6" and hover 147-150lbs) and a solid, athletic, hourglass shape. My boyfriend constantly wants to pick me up but I'm too scared to let him. Do you think 150 is too heavy to pick up? I'm really think that he is underestimating my weight.

user-pic

I don't think 150 pounds is too heavy to pick up at all! If you don't want to be picked up then keep telling guys not to, but I'm guessing most guys wouldn't have much trouble with it. :) I weight 25 pounds more than that, and a friend gave me a pretty long piggy back ride one Halloween (haha, how obvious is it that we were both really intoxicated and that my shoes huuuuuuurt!) Anyway, I never would have guessed that was physically possible and would usually tell guys not to try (I definitely don't look light, but most people would guess my weight as lower than it is), but because I was drunk I wasn't embarrassed and let him do it and we had a lot of fun! So if you're into it I'd let the guy try.

user-pic

well I'm unusually tiny---- could wanting to pick me up just be merely because I'm small and not because of an invested interest? Could it merely just be because I will be a fairly easy way to prove to others around them they can pick up a human being?

user-pic

I'm really small and quite light, so I get picked up ALL. THE. TIME. by pretty much everyone. Being used to it, I'm not really bothered at all by the behaviour, I actually quite enjoy it! That being said, I am involved in the BDSM community and won't go to events by myself BECAUSE of my small stature and the ability to be picked up so easily. My friends really enjoy picking me up and I can't complain!

Brooke

I like getting picked up. It's fun. As long as I'm not thrown over someone's shoulder like a sack of potatoes or something, we're good.

user-pic

For the girls being subconscious about guys misjudging their weight- I'm about 140lbs and a friend recently picked me up and carried me around (even though I said I was too heavy, big mistake) and he thought I was at most 120lbs... So I wouldn't worry unless he's one of those carnival guys who has to guess your weight for a living haha

user-pic

haha, I am short (5'1") and this happens every once in a while. Doesn't help that I am lighter than I look either....

user-pic

My girlfriend HATES being lifted up. Luckily for me I'm so scrawny and have almost no muscle that I probably wouldn't pick her up if I tried, so it works!

user-pic

Guy randomly literally picking you up = weird. Guy picking you up and carrying you to the bed for some hot lovin' = dead sexy. (Well, it's dead sexy when you know he has the muscle to do it and that he won't drop you; otherwise it's kind of scary. Like one of the other posters, I'm 5'6" and at least 146 lbs.)

user-pic

The only times I've ever been picked up by a guy (outside of high school/college) always involved sex w/ a guy I was seeing. He surprised me the first time by lifting me w/ one arm up onto his kitchen counter, and then later on taking me off the counter and holding me up while we had some hot lovin'! And then multiple times he's carried me to his room or my room. I dig it. :) I'm 145 lbs.

user-pic

I've never been picked up before but I think that a guy friend was about to do it (highly suspect that he likes me) but i sorta stopped him before i realized what he was doing. ;(

user-pic

Well, I'm build like the She Hulk and I know plenty of men (of all sizes and builds) that have been able to carry me with no problem. I'm almost 5'10" and I weight 166 pounds.

user-pic

I'm freakishly tiny! I'm 5"1 and 95 pounds! (NOT anorexic) and i like being picked up!

user-pic

oh how i wish i would get picked up!!! i love being carried, there's just something very romantic about it....but i'm scared the guy won't be able to carry me....i'm about 63 kgs and 167 cms u see....so i keep avoiding it and till now no guy has really pushed it :(

user-pic

this post is some months ago, but i want to answer anyway. I am a guy and i enjoy it so so much too, if she like to be carried. Sure 63kg is not lightest weight, but not too much to carry anyway and totally fine for your height of 167cm too :) And it feels great if i can give her some fun by carrying her around. Maybe I am a little freaky about that, yes. But it has a great spirit and romantic. I really wished i can contact you somehow just for offer a carry/cradle :)hehe

user-pic

I'm rather young, let's go for early teens, and at our skating show there were three guys who we were all very good friends with. They would always pick us up from the middle of nowhere, but unlike some of the girls, I'm not as petite as them. Yes I'm very short, 5'1 or 5'2 but I'm like 100 to 110 pounds. I really dont want one of them to break their back or something!!!

user-pic

Dude, 105-110 is the exactly correct weight for someone 5'2". Trust me, I'm a girl and have those same measurements. You are perfect.

user-pic

I am early teens 5' or 5'1" and 86 lbs i havnt gotten hips or curves yet mum says Theyll come wit age... all the boys at class make fun of and joke about my smallness some say they want to jst pick me up and throw me and some say ur boy friend will be happy because they can always hold u and cuddle u and it will be so easy but im afraid of getting a like major growth spirt and losing my petieteness for ever :(

user-pic

So many self conscious girls, just because you THINK you are heavy, doesn't mean you are, none of you who have posted your weight and height seem that heavy to me, stop worrying so much and enjoy it! :)
