Three possible reasons:
1) We don't like the glare. If our phone is sitting on a coffee table it will sometimes catch glare from the television or the window. And that's not cool.
2) We are easily distracted by push notifications. So, to be respectful to you and other people, we put our phones face down so that we don't keep checking in.
3) We are cheating on you and we don't want you to see the text messages from the myriad of women we are cheating on you with.
I sincerely hope that your boyfriend falls into one of the first two categories. I'm 99% sure he does.

Also force of habit. Maybe he's used to trying to keep his texts with you private around everyone else so he's just gotten into the habit of keeping it face down at all times. Especially if you all ever send racier texts. I know I do that. I've had a couple of "oh sh*t!" moments around friends and family when my guy decided to use porn as lifemodels to work on anatomy and contorted poses, and then sent me some pics of his sketch book, my grandmother doesn't need to see a sketch of a bj on my phone no matter how beautifully executed or proud he is of how it turned out. So I started keeping it face down most of the time, and its just habit now.
I didn't know it was just men that did that. I do it too.
Yep, number two. Still wants cell phone handy in case of emergency calls etc, doesn't want to be distracted by texts and notifications.
If they were cheating the phone wouldn't even be visible, he'd have it right out of sight and on silent too

What about when he gets a text or calls and pulls it out of his pocket just enough for him to see it? Is he cheating or just being private?
