Because he's a jerk. A turd-head. A lame-O. He doesn't imagine that you are a real human person, or that a Facebook wall is the equivalent of just texting everyone in your address book at once.
Some people suck. I'm sorry you ran into one, and that he has a history with your man. I urge you not to allow that to reflect TOO MUCH on your boyfriend. Evaluate that relationship on its own merits; if things work well between you, an asshole buddy isn't necessarily a dealbreaker.
But this is definitely something you should bring up. I'd never expect my partner to ditch a friend just for me (within limits), but I'd also expect them to stick up for me when my friends condescend to or insult me. That's part of his job now, and feel free to remind him that he's being amply rewarded for that.
I mean boobies, in case that wasn't clear.
