Why is it that after you orgasm you have to pee really bad?

I'm never positive of the gender of those asking questions, but while I hope this was asked by a dude (because I've experienced this and always wondered about it), I'll assume it was asked by a woman (because when I googled "why do you have to pee after orgasm," all the results were about female orgasm, lending yet more credibility to the notion that I'm the most feminine straight man on the planet).

So, the leading opinion among the jumbled misspellings and dubious euphemisms for genitalia out on the interhub is that the body relaxes after orgasm, including your bladder muscles, and you can probably figure it out from there.

What's perhaps more interesting is the number of websites where women claim to be confused during sex about whether they are approaching orgasm or need to pee. You really can't tell the difference? Is orgasming no better than a good whizz? I weep for you. Or am I sneezing? Can't be sure.

And what is certainly interesting, if true, is the number of sites claiming that if you ignore the urge to pee after sex, you increase your risk of a UTI, as urine is nature's sterilizer. I find the claim suspicious, mostly because it wasn't presented anywhere credible and usually included the phrase "cleens ur pee-hole." Anyone pretending to be a doctor in the comments want to speak to that?

I will gladly pretend to be a doctor and say that sounds right. But I'm pretty sure resisting the urge to pee at any time can contribute to UTIs. And I am pretending here, so I would find anything I just said dubious at best. If there's one thing I've learned from my Biomedical Ethics class, it is that I am not a doctor.

(If there's another thing, it's that you can write an advance directive that you want to die if you reach X point in the progression of a disease, but if you are at that point and are not competent to ask for Physician Assisted Suicide, the doctors have to ignore the advance directive. However, they *can* withdraw treatment and let you starve to death/"let the disease run its course." Of course, it's *really* unlikely to get this far with a UTI, but it is an interesting ethical issue.)

Just in response to the squirting thing: Although the liquid does come from the bladder, it isn't necessarily urine. Liking a girl squirting/gushing/ whatever one calls it isn't the same as wanting to see a girl pee. To be frank, I sure as hell know what comes out of me when I gush is not urine, wherever it originates from (though going to the toilet beforehand is a wise idea).

It is true that you can increase the risk of getting a UTI if you don't pee after sex. But even my teacher in school for single living said it doesn't have to be -right- after either. You can take the time to cuddle and whatever you want, hell even take a snooze if you feel like it. But to not go pee within a reasonable time after does open the risk of those bacteria to make those UTI or bladder infections. I personally have gone up to 4 hours without peeing afterwards and still was totally fine. It also helps if you leave the panties off so air can get there and help keep you dry if you intend to cuddle or snooze.

And the urge to pee after the big O? Well think about it the bladder is -right- next to your vag area and so while all the moving and groovin is taking place your bladder gets stimulated alot thus increasing the feeling like you'll pee. This happens to me alot as well and I'm sure it happens to many other ladies too. then also add in the relaxed feeling and yeah it can create an urgent need for the bathroom. Hell when I get relaxed/cold/ overly excited I feel the need to pee XD

Oh another thing I learned about is that when a girl 'squirts' during an orgasam it's not jizz or anything like that. It's really a bladder secretion that shoots out, it's nothing from the vag at all. So guys who say they crave watching girls squirt are pretty much saying they like bladder fluids so much it turns them on lol

Geeze I'm surprised you never asked your wife any of this stuff Michael! Isn't she in medical school? That'd be a good enough reason to ask her and get answers on this :P

Michael Swaim

Yeah, I stopped asking her about medical issues after her powerpoint presentation about anal prolapse (DO NOT GOOGLE).

Oh god, I should have listened!
Palate cleanser! Palate cleanser!

I've had a UTI in the past and when I went to my doctor she told me to make sure I peed after sex because it does, in not-so-technical terms, "clean your pee-hole"

sounds funny but I guess it's true.

Well, Michael, if it means anything, I don't think you're feminine at all (and I think your wife would concur with me here), just like Duckie on "Pretty in Pink" isn't feminine at all. He's just his own masculine, unique self, and I think you are too.
Anyway with the pee thing, I've certainly experienced this. I guess the only way to explain it is that, just like guys, everything is connected. The womb and the bladder are so close together that what feels like one thing affects the other too.
One thing I've always wondered, when a guy comes, does he feel like he's peeing?

Michael Swaim

Nope. If anything, peeing will sometimes feel disconcertingly pleasant, but usually not the other way around.

My boyfriend said the same thing when I asked him that question.

You're not alone in having to urinate after orgasm. I have experienced it as well, but like you, I don't know about other guys. Generally we aren't ashamed to talk about sex, but we're not into details. We'll talk, but not about specifics such as this.

Urine is sterile while inside the body, but once extricated, it can often be contaminated with bacteria.

user-pic

This happens to me too.
Sometimes sex just makes me need to pee...so I stop, and go pee, and come back, and it still happens.
It's pretty annoying.

flaka661

the UTI part is a true fact lol

user-pic

Its 100 percent true that its best to pee right after sex, actually its best to pee before and after. Because the urethra is so very close to the vagina, fluids and bacteria can be pushed into it. If you dont pee out the foreign bodies you can get an infection. Its the same for any opening. If anal bacterial get into our vaginas we will get a yeast infection.

While you weep, I'm going to sit over here and be relieved that I'm not the only one uncertain about distinguishing the two.

user-pic

I actually cannot concur more with all your feedback about this. You did an excellent job addressing everything.

If you're still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you'll know which is right for you.

I’d have to grant with you here. Which is not something I usually do! I enjoy reading a post that will make people think. Also, thanks for allowing me to speak my mind!
