I considered it the instant I read your question, and for about three minutes thereafter. I consider becoming intimate with nearly every female I ever come in contact with. I briefly considered becoming intimate with the picture of George Washington on a dollar bill that had a hole in it (if you squint his wig is very convincing).
But if you mean what I think you mean: "will MY friend, Chet Westinghouse, date me?" My advice in that case is to go for it, if only on romantic grounds. Life is short, you can always make more friends, better to have loved and lost, make sure the needle passes the sternum and enters the heart, etc.
Getting involved with a friend is just as fraught with peril as you've heard, but I've yet to meet anyone who can resist the temptation forever, so why delay the inevitable? You want to bump uglies with this dude, see how it shakes out. Then do that. Be THAT.
If it ends up driving a wedge between you and your best friend, at least you'll have the solace of knowing what his junk looks like.
