Writer to writer, I need some advice. I'm graduating college soon w/ a writing degree & want to get into MFA program, but I also majored in tv production as a "day job" & fell in love w/ entertainment law, now considering law school. I want time for kids/writing/etc, but don't want to take the easy route. Thoughts?

Why not? Something different and something I love.

First off, you don't need a degree to write. You simply need to write. Every day, without fail, no matter how tired, stressed or uninspired you feel. And you will feel tired, stressed and uninspired.
Sure, you have better language tools through taking the degree, and that will help. A little bit. It'll screw up your dialogue though. And, as a guy who wades through a load of stories on the slush piles, stop using the damned passive voice for everything! Action is active. Short sharp sentences. Omit needless words. The shorter the sentences, the faster your readers breathe. Cheap trick to make them more involved and excited, but it works. (pet peeve)

Secondly, the day job. You need one. Virtually no one makes a living from writing, especially not at the start (yeah, another shout out, but a LOT of online writers started there). Entertainment law is a good field, as is production. You get less of the glass ceiling effect in production, though it is still there.

Finally, kids and family. That is what we are here for, with apologies to those who do not wish kids. You will not sleep. Balancing out your obligations, to work, writing and most importantly family leaves you about 6 hours a day. You can sleep, or you can write.
I find my nightly sleep is about 4 hours now.

It won't kill you. You just wish it would.

While entertainment law may sound interesting, I would caution against going to law school at this time for two main reasons. First of all, having a life while being a law student or an attorney is very difficult, because it requires so much of your time. Second, the job market for attorneys is pretty bad right now. I have recently graduated law school, and I have some friends who have been looking for jobs as attorneys for over 1 year and still have not found anything. If you're really interested in entertainment law, I would recommend doing informational interviews with entertainment attorneys to see if that is something that you would like to do. I wish you a ton of luck in pursuing your dreams.
