Did you try getting him back? If you like him that much, why give up so easily? That's why you can't move on. You have unfinished business.
You aren't the first person to say something dumb in the heat of an argument. Everyone does it. I can't tell you how many times I've had to apologize for stuff that flew out of my mouth before I could catch it. It happens.
You screwed up and you regret it. Tell him so. Apologize. If you still want him back -- and it sounds like you do -- say so. Tell him you miss him and want a relationship again. Sure, you run the risk of rejection, but that's life; when you make a mistake, you have to set aside your pride and, as the saying goes, eat sh*t. Don't worry -- you'll get used to the taste.
The worst that could happen is that he says no, which leaves you no worse off than you are now. If he says yes, then it's water under the bridge and you have your man back.
No matter what happens, apologizing to him isn't only the right thing to do, but it will do your soul good. It's also the way to get over him if he won't take you back. Offering an apology is the only thing you can do now. If that's not enough for him, that will be unfortunate, but at least you'll have the satisfaction of knowing you did what you could to make amends for your mistake.
The "keep well thy tongue" tag made me smile. Yes, that is a good way to go if you can pull it off. I don't think anyone can do it all the time. And when you can't, apologizing for speaking out of anger is the next thing called for. Good advice from Cary here. Might as well make the effort and see if you can get him back. If you don't at least try, you may never forgive yourself. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Excellent advice. I'm with ya - we all say stuff in the heat of the moment. If he's the right kind of guy for you, he'll still be there after the dust settles & you can say you're sorry for the word vomit. ;)
I totally agree with Cary! Don't give up so easily, otherwise you may always be wondering, "what if" and you may never get the closure that you need to move on. If he doesn't take you back, then at least you know that you've tried and you can (hopefully) move on a bit easier.
