With the holidays behind us and and an awful lot of winter ahead of us, it's easy to get a little depressed. The cold days tend to blend together, and you can find yourself feeling like life won't start back up until April. But before you resign yourself to hibernate on your couch, in your bed, or at the back of your cave, your friendly neighborhood Mystery Man has a few suggestions on things to do to stay warm and stay sane during this long, cold January. Five suggestions, in fact.
Five Things To Add To Your January To-Do List
1. Learn to cook something you've never cooked before. There are a million different places on the internet to find a new recipe. So pick one and pick a day. Bake some bread, make some fajitas, try to create a meringue. Even if you fail, whatever you make will still probably be edible, and will give you a good story. It beats ordering pizza because it is too cold to go out to eat.
2. Travel to a place within twenty miles that you've never been. Aside from geriatrics that fly down to Florida for the winter, most people don't consider January to be prime traveling season. And while unexpected snowstorms might screw up schedules at airport, there's no reason to lock yourself away in the living room and avoid going anywhere interesting. Pick a spot within twenty miles that you've never been to - a museum that recently added an exhibit, or a bed and breakfast (rooms in most B&Bs are cheaper in the winter), or even just a different mall - and go there. Take your significant other if you have one. Or just take yourself. Just because it's cold doesn't mean that fun trips stop being fun. So go on a quick one.
3. Watch every movie nominated for Best Picture Academy Award. The nominees are going to be announced on January 10th. That gives us three weeks to watch every potential Best Picture. If you're snowed in somewhere in North Dakota and are tired of Fashion Police repeats, then watch the movies that the Academy is honoring instead. Make popcorn, get a blanket, and expand your knowledge of fine film.
4. Do something sporty. Either out in the cold or in the warm confines of a gym, spend a day being sporty this January. Sites like Groupon or LivingSocial are full of discounts for fitness centers, martial arts classes and ski resorts. So take advantage. Never been on a snowboard? Now's your chance! Not sure what precisely capoeira is? You can learn it! If one of your New Year's Resolutions was to get in shape, a fun and sporty day is a nice step in that direction.

5. Plan out the most relaxing possible day and then do it. Even if most of your days are already pretty relaxing, take a moment to list out everything that would be a part of your most relaxing possible day. What would you watch on television? What would you eat? What would you wear? Make a big list of everything and then plan it and prep it ahead of time. That way, when you wake up, your favorite pajamas are laid out ahead of time, your mac'n'cheese is ready to be microwaved and your DVD of Mean Girls is already in the player. Then, sit back and enjoy.
January is a cold month and a long one too, but it doesn't have to be a sad month. Single or dating, old or young, you can make your January delightful with a little bit of thought and planning. If you start the year off well, the rest of it will probably be pretty good too.
