Lane Bryant says ABC and Fox are both busted for refusing to air a sexy bra commercial featuring full-figured cleavage. In the ad, the LB model's cups definitely runneth over. But similarly scandalous Victoria's Secret ads run constantly on network TV.
Lane Bryant calls it a double-cleavage-standard. The company says curvy girls are getting the short end of the bra when ABC and Fox restrict ad airtime during "Dancing With The Stars" and "American Idol."
So what do the guys think about the bra brouhaha?
How much is too much when it comes to cleavage? (Or, the more scientific term, "boobage.") As guys, which would you rather see on your TV? The curvy cleavage from Lane Bryant or the itty-bitty bras from Victoria's Secret? (Be honest!)
Reformed Player says:
There is no such thing as too much boobage. It's like whipped cream. Can you have enough? I mean, so long as she isn't hunched over, pushing her girls along in a wheelbarrow...
Victoria's Secret models all look like they have no bodily fluids, nor excrete any matter from their bodies. These Lane Bryant hotties are like sexy Valkyries.
Funny Guy says:
"Too much cleavage" is an archaic term, akin to "horseless carriage" or "net neutrality." I think you mean "too much cleavage to comfortably ogle at while grandma's in the room." That said, I would have no problem ogling this ad with my grandma. But to be fair, granny's always been a boob gal.
To be totally honest, I find the Victoria's Secret women distant and vaguely angry. I feel like their breasts hate me for looking at them, and they'd probably call me a peasant or something if I ever approached them. Whereas the gal in the Lane Bryant ad seems like a nice, normal woman; the kind of girl you can take out to a movie or dinner wearing nothing but underwear and a black trench coat. I'd go for the full-bodied flasher any day of the week (except maybe the day of my child's clarinet recital).
Girl's BFF says:
Boobage and cousin Cleavage are our friends and should be welcomed and encouraged to attend as many events as possible, because friendship is never a bad thing. It's included with life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. It's just in fine print so it's a little harder to see on the parchment.
On my television set where impressionable children may be watching, I'd rather see the fairly asexual seeming Victoria's Secret models. They're too manequinesque and don't even seem real. Unlike the Lane Bryant chick, who got me more randy than this last season of American Idol because she looks like a woman I'd know in real life. Can't watch that around the kiddies!
This one's tough, because it makes me choose sides between two of my favorite things: TV and plus-size models. Stop fighting, you two! Is there such a thing as "too much cleavage"? Unless we're talking about the kind that pops out of a burly handyman's jeans when he bends over, I'm going to say no. Sure, there's a time and place. And that place is during church and/or a funeral. I kid! That sort of thing only happens in Spanish-language soap operas.
I would much rather see curvy, real women on TV than vacant Victoria's Secret models. (As nice as their underwear is, they did give us Tyra Banks. Is that really a fair trade?) In fact, I want plus-size models in all of my TV shows. Replace the waifs on Lost with the women in the "Dove Real Women" ad campaign. Ban Calista Flockhart and Lara Flynn Boyle from ever appearing on TV again. Give me CSI: Healthy Curves Unit.
Gal Pal says:
Damn, that ad is hot. Makes me want to go out and buy a trenchcoat. Nevermind about the underwear...
The woman in the LB commercial is beautiful. I didn't find anything offensive about it...for god sakes its panties and bras...
My only issue with LB is that it promotes being over weight... I mean, morbid obesity is not attractive (neither is just being over weight) .. Don't get me wrong, I don't think theres anything wrong with having meat on your bones. But being too juicy is bad for your health. So just keep it in check...
As for the VS models, they are beautiful as well. I think the reason why people hate on them is because they are threatened by that kind of beauty.. lmao you know damn well the Vicky Secret girls are beloved by men. As unrealistic as it is to be that thin, its just an idealized form of beauty that we have been fed to accept... But its just that, unrealistic fantasy..
The woman in that Lane Bryant ad is in no way overweight. I think the word you are looking for is "perfect."
Vee,
Lane Bryant is not promoting obesity. It is saying that women of all sizes deserve to feel good about themselves. Yes, the model (the amazingly beautiful Ashley Graham - who I saw at a New York fashion week event several years ago... it is not all smoke and mirrors. Besides, without all of their make-up and hair done many of the Victoria Secret models look like British men - my apologies to the British men out there) is overweight but the goal is not to promote her as an ideal body type. The goal of the commercial is to use a beautiful woman to sell lingerie to other woman. Sound familiar? You can see ribs in some of those Victoria Secret commercials and that is not necessarily healthy or beautiful. Not everyone who is overweight eats too much fast food and sits on the couch all day.
On another note:
Let's face it, those networks choose not to air the commercial because it features a large woman. Other lingerie commercials feature just as much cleavage. At least this one does not have the porn music or the writhing. It should have been aired. This however, is a great marketing technique because it causes controversy and more people are talking about it now than there would be if the commercial got aired.
dude...I'm a size 6.. LB goes up to 24 , how the hell does that represent me?
It's alright .. Big girls need clothes too.
You're not the only person who would be seeing the commercial, obviously. They're not gonna leave a huge market of overweight women who wear underwear untapped because OMG VEE IS A SIZE 6.
It doesn't represent YOU any more than VS commercials represent the women who buy LB clothes. Everything on television doesn't have to represent -you- specifically to be legitimate. There are a lotta ladies out there, and most of them buy underwear.
Big girls don't cryyyyy lmao . Its cool its cool, your good. Eat your food, shop at LB, and do you.
I made my point .. A longggg time ago... If someone didn't have a different set of views, this whole conversation would be about how great being pudgy is. One slender individual stirs the pot , and everyone has something to say. I love it ;p
In our skewed society, a size 6 isn't really considered slender anymore - it's considered average. If you want to be called slender, you have to be a size 0 or 00. I'm a size 6 too and I myself sometimes feel fat when looking at certain ads. And I know that's just my own insecurities popping out at that particular moment and you can't fault the advertiser for pushing their product - how else are they going to sell it - but it's also nice to see ads where women have bodies more like your own.
Disappointed that the WiseAss had nothing to say about this, but good article!
Sorry, the Wise-Ass was too busy throwing up at this entire funked-up scene to answer. What a load of horse shit. The ad was hot and TV networks are run by morons, but that's nothing new. The model looked good to me -- normal and sexy as hell.
As for the comments, whatever happened to live and let live? Beautiful women (and men) come in all shapes and sizes. It's all subjective, anyway. If you think being overweight is gross, then don't be overweight. What anybody else does or how they look is none of your concern, so keep your judgments to yourself, lest you show the entire world just how ignorant and mean-spirited you really are.
Wow, that Woman is gorgeous! and I disagree with you Vee about Lane Bryant promoting overweight life style. There are women out there with a large IBM, not just small or medium. Plus, most women in the world are not unrealistically skinny as VS unless they sculpt themselves that way, which promote issues like Anorexia and Bulimia Nervosa at a very young age. We as a society are constantly bombarded by iconographic figures, if skinny was not in, we would see a larger representation of full figured women.
There is a fine line between sexy curves, and being a cheeseburger away from obese... I just find that VS and LB are two extremes. If your too skinny I'd tell you to eat a sandwich and if you were too fat I'd pity you for having no self pride...
I see what your saying, but that is an issue that has to be discussed between the fast food chain and the consumer: People have to control their appetite and choose a healthy life style (nothing wrong with eating cheeseburgers, just don't eat 3 of them a day), and Food chains should sale healthier food at a reasonable price.
I wish there would be a fast food answer to health foods... When I'm desperate the only thing I can grab is a subway wholegrain sandwich.. I don't torture myself to look a certain way, but yeah moderation is key.. Believe me I would love to let loose, not go to the gym and just eat sliders and have beer. But now my metabolism has slowed down considerably so I can't indulge..
The most ignorant thing a guy ever told me was "Why would you have to work out, you have a boyfriend now"... People who take care of themselves have pride...No muffin tops aren't attractive, and no saggy titts because of fluctuating weight suck ass too... I'm done with my rant... I didn't find fault with the commercial , and really if VC can air half naked women, then I guess LB shouldn't be discriminated against...
I usually tend to agree with you, but as one who has put on a number of pounds and inches in the last 2 years (post kiddo), I find it very arrogant and superficial of you to say that overweight people have no pride in our appearances. Would we all like to lose weight, of course, everyone wants to look perfect, but does that mean that we don't any pride in our appearances? No. And there is nothing wrong with being a little overweight (which btw, the LB model is definitely not). It seems your idea of overweight people is that we sit around stuffing ourselves with junk food and not bothering to keep ourselves healthy, well, sorry chica but you are wrong. I eat very healthy home cooked meals that contain correct serving sizes and follow that ol fashion food pyramid, and I am in the habit of putting the kiddo in the stroller and walking all round my small town on a regular basis. Do I have days that I dont exercise? Yes, if by that you mean I dont go out walking, but I still carry a 25lb child up and down the stairs multiple times a day, I still get down in the floor and romp with her which includes lots of leg lifts and sit ups, etc that use not only my own body weight but hers as well, and I'm positive I'm not the only "overweight" person that gets regular exercise and eats healthy. I think your perceptions of health, weight, and nutrition are slightly skewed darling.
Btw, your subway multi-grain sub is full of bad for you preservatives, salt and the cheese is only processed, not "real" cheese. Also having a beer has been shown to lower your risks of both cancer and heart disease, boost memory and also increase levels of Vitamin B6, just saying.
LB is the extreme opposite of VS? That is CRAZY! The LB models are no where near morbid obesity. They are just sexy, curvy women. Besides, who says that an overweight person isn't healthy? I'm overweight, but I guarantee that I am healthier than a lot of "skinny" people. Health isn't about weight and BMI, it's about internal health. And just because a person is overweight does not mean that they do not have pride in themselves. I, for one, love the way I look. Do I want to lose weight? Sure, but even if I never lose another pound, I am happy with who I am and with how I look. I'm sorry if you can't accept that.
Cary, where's your Wise-Ass opinion? I would have loved to read what you would have said...unless you're still watching the ad for an unbiased opinion.
Okay, enough sarcasm. No matter the position on underwear ads on TV, I have to say that the guys' opinions made me feel immensely better. It's nice to know that I don't have to torture myself to be attractive. Being morbidly obese is definitely not okay, but as one of my guy friends told me once, a little junk in the trunk never hurt anyone. And yes, I eat right and exercise, but I am never going to look like a supermodel. I'm going to have curves and there's nothing I can do about it. I would rather be healthy, thank you.
Those VC models always look so HUNGRY...no wonder they look cranky...
"...a little junk in the trunk never hurt anyone."
LOL, you can say that again!
The LB commercial is beautiful. In this world you've got little naïve 11 year old girls thinkin that SKINNY is a compliment. That's bullshit. America and it's warped standards of beauty can honestly kiss my ass and relish in the curve of it. I mean, if all these bony bitches can get naked and pooch around on tv when in reality... That's all it really is is just that-TV aka the he'll box that runs the world... Then the REAL WOMEN--the ones that live and breathe and eat and make love in REAL LIFE...should be able to flaunt this God given natural beauty on TV or on the streets without any disdain. I have spoken.
I think the fact that LB is claiming that they were discriminated for being "to fat for tv" is simply bullshit. The model in that commercial was perfection and I'd be suprised is she's big enough to shop at lane bryant at all. The reason that they didn't show it is because, YES, it is REALLY SEXY. In the best way possible of course. But American Idol and Dancing With The Stars are shows that families sit down and watch together, and nobody wants to see daddy or grandpa getting all hot and bothered during one of their unusually long commercial breaks. Victorias Secret models are not nearly as sexy to men as most women think. If you saw those women next to the lane Bryant women, you would probably say the LB girls are sexier. The networks are saying the whole thing isn't true, but if it is it's not because the girls are "too fat" like they said on the news, but actually too sexy. Though sexy or not, I think it would be a good idea to air it and show young girls what a healthy (not to skinny, but not encouraging obesity) and beautiful woman looks like.
The LB model is one of the most beautiful and sexy women I have ever had the pleasure of laying my eyes on! I think the commercial is a little too sexy for younger kids, but todays youth needs to see what real beautiful women look like and know that bean poles are not what they should strive to be. As much as obesity may plague the country, Anorexia and Bulimia are just as common, because we have been told time and time again that skinnier is sexier. I'm more sad over that than obesity!
So basically curvy means big breasts? What about girls who are thin but don't have the VS or LB cleavage/boobage. I feel like there is this consensus that overweight is ok as long as the boobs are huge. However, for those girls who are thin (not necessarily VS model thin) but not pouring out of their shirts.. they're the odd (wo)man out. Not curvy.. not model skinny.. just non-existent?
What if this LB model wasn't so chesty but the rest of her body was "rounded"...would she still be "perfection"?
That being said, her face is gorgeous.
Also, what if the LB model wasn't dolled up? What if she was just average looking in her face, and fat as hell? We're still going to say, "Yeah you go girl, be empowered with your fat self" . Get real, its all smoke and mirrors people...
Fat is not beautiful, fit and strong is.If there was a fire in my building, and I was that heavy, how the fuck is the poor fireman going to haul my ass down? Thats freaking negligent on your part if your that freggin big.
Yeah I get it, a vast number of women in this country look like that. But guess what? The rest of the world doesn't. Its because they don't poison their foods, and they don't shove this idea that being full figured is some how better...
I'll just say this... If your happy being big, good for you. But don't kid yourself by thinking that men don't prefer hard bodied beauties to slam pigs...
I don't need a man's acceptance to feel good about myself, thanks.
So please quit bashing other woman about their weight and how they should feel about themselves. Weight is only a number, and it is based on so many things. Everyone has the right to feel good about they look, regardless of what you think.
In Africa, fat women are considered beautiful. This is on a contienent where there are a lot of starving people.
I agree with you that there are a lot of toxins in our food, though. It's kind of scary if you think about it.
I'm not saying it's okay to be fat. It's not. But not all of us are going to be 120lb perfection. People come in all shapes and sizes, and it's not always carelessness that makes people bigger than they should be. Sometimes it's health conditions that the people have no control over. I once knew this beautiful girl who was somewhat overweight because of a chronic heart condition. She had had 2 open-heart surgeries and had to restrict her activity, otherwise she could go into cardiac arrest. Obviously, she could not exercise as much as a normal person could.
Is being overweight still her fault?
Yes... In Africa.. And if Mama Cass had shared her sandwich with Karen Carpenter , they'd both be alive..
I really don't care.. If your fat your gross... Where I reside people will ridicule you because of it ... To your face, or behind your back... You pick.
MB, I'm sure you look just fine, honey. We are all unique, beautiful individuals, and the right person will look at you for your outer and your inner beauty, not what you may or may not have. First, though, you have to like yourself. Don't be kissing your mirror or anything, but there's nothing wrong with believing you deserve the best.
If you don't believe me, look at some of JDV's past posts. He has really good things to say. :)
I've seen the commercial, and there is absolutely no way that ABC and FOX didn't air it because the model was "too big". Who seriously believes that? What rubbish!
Lane Bryant and their models are, of course, saying that because, let's get real: everybody LOVES playing the victim. Whether it's for your race, class, gender, sexual orientation, political affiliation, or yes...your weight...everyone loves victim status because it makes you feel morally superior to everyone else.
That being said, the model in the ad is GORGEOUS...and the ad is a tad racy, but I've seen far worse on prime time tv.
And Vee, normally I enjoy reading your comments, but you're really toeing a line right about now. I completely understand your belief that obesity isn't beautiful, but the LB model in the ad is NOT unhealthy and nowhere NEAR obese. It honestly frightens me that you can't seem to comprehend the difference between healthy and overweight.
You also assume, as another commenter already pointed out, that all overweight people are overweight due to their own laziness, when it could have everything to do with factors completely out of their control. Quit being so judgmental and think about how hurtful your words might be to others before you post about such a sensitive topic.
Overall, you just seem really insecure, what with your need to so explicitly put others down. I think you may have some personal issues to work out.
I think everyone should read Funny Guy's blog entry entitled, "So You're Fat". I think it sums up a near-perfect view on this issue.
Woahh.. What the hell is wrong with you people?
As cheesy as this is going to sound, doesn't ANYONE here think that woman can be beautiful at ALL sizes? Seems to me like this site is full of people who either consider overweight women as 'pigs', or skinny women as not being 'real women' because they don't have T&A. I mean seriously?
I'm not going to defend larger women because enough people here already have, and because in overweight America the saying 'Real women have curves' has been overused to defend larger women. But that's bullshit.
I guess I can safely chop off all my hair, drink beer with my legs spread out and start writing for GuySpeak, because apparently my A-cups make my gender really confusing.
lol what a visual !
Women of all sizes CAN be beautiful, absolutely. I doubt anyone would sincerely deny that. BUT...obesity and underweight-ness are not healthy. Encouraging it, treating it as just another trait like race or sex, and patting obese/underweight men/women on the back and saying it's ok is irresponsible, because health-wise, it's not ok.
I think we're getting kind of off-topic here anyway. The point is that despite the fact that obesity is dangerous, the West's perception of what healthy/beautiful is is still severely messed up. Anorexic has become healthy, and healthy has become fat.
Elizabeth: agree with your T&A sentiments... that's the point I was trying to make in my above comment.
Furthermore. fat is unhealthy. I'm sick of people saying it's not. It is at the very least carelessness and lack of pride with obese people. An overweight person has every opportunity to choose a healthy meal.. there is absolutely NO EXCUSE for not educating ones self on what one should consume or not consume. If people took the time to cook homemade healthy meals instead of choosing pre-made, pre-packaged, processed foods it wouldn't be such an epidemic. Fat or not most people are unaware of what is in the food that they are eating. It is laziness. Sure at first it's not as fun to stop eating junk food but that's part of self control and maturity. I don't feel bad for people who can't take care of themselves like intelligent adults. And as for people who have medical issues preventing them from exercising... how does that prevent them from eating healthy whole foods vs. junkie processed foods? That's right.. it doesn't. Stop making excuses - grow up.
Oh wow, normally I try to keep my opinions to myself, but I'm really peeved at a couple of things that have been said on here. First of all, just because I'm not a size 4 doesn't mean that I'm any less beautiful than you Vee. I'm a smoking hot size 12/14 and proud of it and nowhere near "Obese".
There's nothing wrong with not being a stick figure and still being proud of your body. The fact that you so badly want to push the idea of being tiny down everyones throat and have openly said that you find women with curves to be "disgusting" screams of closemindedness and ignorance, and quite honestly sounds like the rants of a fat girl who can't get the approval of others in real life, so you resort to internet bashing of people who you feel may be "unacceptable" in society. People like you.
There are plenty of women in the spotlight who are not a size 2. Take Beyonce Knowles, for example....she has openly admitted to being a size 8/10. Would you be comfortable opening your mouth to talk sh*t on her and her body type? Don't think so. Anyways, I think I've made my point. If you want to continue bitching about people who have the confidence to be proud of who they are and how they look, by all means go right ahead. Your ignorance has provided me with cheap entertainment while I'm sitting in my office tonight, and for that I thank you, but as far as I'm concerned you take take your hateful attitude and kiss my perfectly firm, rounded ass.
Well, I just watched that commerical and I dont even know WHY they would ban that and allow the other commericals to air that are so much more racy. But, LB has gotten so much press about it that I think its to their benefit.
The woman in the commerical is beautiful and lovely, but she IS overweight (and I mean clinically overweight, not soceity's skewed perception of overweight which is in actuality obese).
I dont think we need to kid ourselves, we all know given the chance between her and a Victoria's Secret model who men would chose. That's reality.
Vee- your comments would be a lot more well received if you weren't so crude about them.
To everyone else, what's with the "real women" shop at LB and "have curves" business? Unless someone has fake boobs or other fake parts, or plastic surgery, they are a real woman. Also... We healthy, not overweight ladies can no longer consider "having curves" a complimentary phrase because its been used for overweight people. Its just kind of annoying because I always have to watch what I say when talking with friends and other ladies or whatever. Now if I go shopping with my friends I have to say, "that looks great it brings out your.... hour-glass-ness....." that's just awkward lol. ALl im saying is, any term that becomes a euphenism for fat become synonymous with fat. It's unfortunate but true. But the thing is, the words dont change reality. Using nice words doesnt make anyone thinner or healthier. I used to be overweight myself (before I took up running, so now I'm thin) so I know what its like. Everyone wants to feel good about their bodies. All I can say is that no euphenism can ever compare to actually beign healthy and feeling hot naked. Actually, I just got lost, I'm dont know where I'm going with this haha. Well, its rediculous that commerical was banned-- but I would still rather be a VS model than a LB model.
Just wanted to back up what others had said in reference to Vee. Not everyone who is overweight is that way because they are lazy slobs. I'm not saying they aren't out there, but it's better not to judge a book by its cover.
I am personally overweight, and even exercising (cardio and weights) for 90 minutes 5 days a week with good-portion meals couldn't make me loose weight. Finally, after nearly 10 years of symptoms I was diagnosed with PCOS, which is caused primarily by Insulin Resistence. My body wasn't utilizing foods properly because the IR was messing with the way I processed carbs. Now I am on a low-carb diet, taking medications to help re-sensitize my cells to insulin, and still maintain the 90 minute workout routines. The weight has started to come off, but it's a slow-going process. I will likely always be a tad overweight due to this issue, and PCOS cannot be cured.
Am I saying that all overweight people have an excuse? No. Some are just plain lazy and eat poorly. But just as you can't say all overweight people have some kind of hormonal condition that makes them that way, you can't say they are all lazy slobs who don't care either. Judge not, lest ye be judged.
Amen, sister! You articulated what I wanted to say better than I did.
Carrie, next time maybe a subject with less of a "Pandora's Box" effect? This one is turning us all into raving bitches.
Love that ad i even have a few of the bras in that ad myself, cant see for the life of me why they would ban that, maybe they're worried about real women being worshipped instead of stick figures? the tide is changing...
I would just like to point out Size 6, in the fashion industry is considered FAT.
Ridiculous yes? But true.
As a girl who's grown up being surrounded by fashion because of her mother, I can tell you that they want tall thin models who wear a 2 or 4. However, when the clothing samples come in, they ship out the "average" sizes. So 1 XS, 1 S, 2 M, 2 L, 1 XL. Meaning the average woman wears a medium or a large.
I wear a size 8/10. I'm a cheerleader so I practice twice a week for 2 hours and work out 3-5 additional times a week. I eat 1500 calories a day and I am in better shape than half the "skinny girls" who walk around my school.
Unfortunately for me, I can't change my body shape. While my parents are two slim people, I get my shape from my grandmother who's tall (I'm average -_-) with broad shoulders, big boobs and a belly pouch that will NOT go away no matter what I do. I AM NOT GROSS for not being skinny.
Neither are my friends who struggle to lose weight because guess what? When you're not born naturally slim, it's not easy to go against what your body is comfortable with!
Women come in different shapes and sizes. Yes, for health reasons, some should consider losing the extra weight but you know what? If they're happy and confident in themselves, let them be.
Just because a person is skinnier doesn't mean that they are healthier. My best friend is 90 lbs and has to sit down for hours after we take an hour stroll outside. My other friend breaks out into a sweat going up stairs. I run circles around both of them, but *I'm* considered the unhealthy one because I'm rounder?
We need to stop measuring a person's beauty on their weight alone, THIS is why women have so many issues with each other! Treat others like you want to be treated and if they're fat, well, they deserve the same respect you would give a skinny person.
That being said. I would like to see someone closer than my size modelling clothes. I'm kind of tired of the extremes.
PS, you think that LB model is something? Check out Christina Hendricks - aka, the hottest women I've ever seen. Sorry Catherine Zeta- Jones.
Go outside! Take a walk, look at all the people in the world and you may notice that everyone happens to be different. fat people. skinny people. Oh no. what a tragedy.
We all need to just get over ourselves because what we see on TV is not reality, whether or not it was banned by the networks.
Why is other people's appearance your business? or my business? it isn't. Try to find happiness in your own life and leave others to do the same.
Live and let live. At the very least turn off your TV and form your own opinions.
Not gonna beat a dead horse here, but my $.02:
Banning the ad was ridiculous. Victoria's Secret ads are much racier and they're on primetime TV all the time! The LB model is gorgeous and not fat in the slightest. Let's face it - even so-called "plus-sized" models are only about a size 10, which is pretty slender IRL. The average dress size in the U.S. is a size 12 - that means that there are a lot of people both larger AND smaller than that size.
I teach my children that people come in all shapes and sizes, and it's horribly rude to judge them or assume anything about them because of their appearance. If you're ugly and judgmental on the inside it will show on the outside no matter what the tag on your jeans says.

I have to say that for the last couple of hours i have been hooked by the amazing posts on this blog. Keep up the great work.
I agree
