Man Marries Video Game Character, Action Figures Likely Next

Perhaps you heard about the Japanese man who married a character from the popular Nintendo DS video game Love Plus. The man, who goes by the name Sal900 (that's tech speak for "giant freaking dork"), wed his virtual girlfriend from the game in a ceremony officiated by an actual live human priest. The 2-D bride even gave a "speech" during the ceremony, and the whole thing was of course broadcast over the Web on a Japanese video site. (Hey, they saved on a videographer.) And, naturally, the couple is registered at the PlayStation store.

Though the whole thing smacks of "stunt" (the guy is a performance artist), it actually seems kind of plausible. With technology going the way it is, it stands to reason that guys will just start marrying fictional characters and inanimate objects left and right.

Here a just a few things that I fully expect some dude will marry before the year 2012.

-- Action figures. Seriously, they're getting more and more detailed these days. Have you see the Heath Ledger Joker figure? It's terrifying.

--Robots. They've already invented a German sex robot that can breathe. It's only a matter of time before some crazy person takes one to Vegas, makes it his bride, and brings about the robot apocalypse.

-- Sim, World of Warcraft or Second Life avatar. Honestly, I'm surprised this hasn't happened yet. Though avatars do have a mating song

-- iPhone. Most iPhone owners would rather part with an arm than go without their "precious." Once Apple invents a quickie marriage license app, it'll be all over.

-- This Krispy Kreme burger. Or the "Craz-E-Burger" as it's also know. Seeing as how they're now on sale in America, it's only a matter of time before some guy makes one his bride. Just looking at that thing makes my heart pound with desire. No, wait, I think it's giving me a heart attack.

So let me get this straight, this person he married isn't real? I've played WoW and it's easy to fall in love with the guy who consistantly saves you from raptors in Stranglethorn Vale or totally has your back in an instance. Helps it he has the power to rez you. So there is no live human being on the other side?

Yeah, men are stupid. Just can't say that enough. Ya'll are just plumb tards.

Yep, he married a Japanese video game character. Held a wedding ceremony and everything. The game is a sort of "virtual girlfriend/dating" game, like one of those virtual pets kids have.

And yet we ban gay marriage. I would say this violates the sanctity of marriage just a wee bit more.

PVP game play has it's issues. I've quested with this 12 year old girl from Canada who sounded like she was 5. The guys in the group absolutly refused to talk to her through voice chat. Instead they just wispered me to ask her questions. As one guy put it "I so do not need the Canadian Mounties knocking on my door".

Just thought I'd share that story since it's fraking hilarious.

I love how you say that men will be marrying action figures, but then use Heath Ledger as the Joker as your example.

Nick Nadel

It's a great figure!

I wouldn't marry it, but I'd at least (to quote 30 Rock) take it behind the middle school and get it pregnant.
