In case you haven't checked the headlines this week, a U.S. congressman has landed his misspeaking butt in hot water after some controversial comments about rape and abortion. During an interview Sunday with station KTVI in St. Louis, Rep. Todd Akin (R-Missouri) had this to say about his abortion beliefs:
"It seems to me, from what I understand from doctors, [pregnancies from rape are] really rare. If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down. But let's assume that maybe that didn't work or something: I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be of the rapist, and not attacking the child."
Oops. I hope he was wearing his peppermint shoes. Akin later issued a statement to say that he "misspoke" during the interview and that his remark "does not reflect the deep empathy I hold for the thousands of women who are raped and abused every year."
Whether he "misspoke" or not--decide for yourself--the tweetosphere was all a-Twitter today with clever jabs at this man who no doubt will be accompanied by a PR person on interviews from now on. Here are some, courtesy of Time.
