One of the perks about being alive is getting to be alive while things happen -- "Events." For many the wedding of Prince William to Kate Middleton will be such an event. Seeing these two humans walk down the aisle will serve for many as some sort of personal marker along the windy road of our human history.
It's easy to poke fun at it. Mostly because it is silly. But I suppose with so many tragic global events in the last decade - terrorism, natural disasters, Glee, wars, etc. why not get on board and give it up for this Royal diversion?
From what I understand, William comes from a pretty famous family. A family with some history and so seeing him tie the knot creates a sense of order -- linking to the past and offering some future stability. The royal family is a weird thing to me, they're public, yet they're private, they have no power, yet they're powerful. They're harder to figure out than Newt Gingrich.
And William himself, I don't really know much about. I know he lost his mother, which is very sad. I know he's prematurely balding, which is also quite sad. I know he is keen on using his position in life for good - helping those less fortunate than him (everyone) gain basic necessities like access to clean running water and decent hunting boots.
Regarding the Lady Kate I know very little of her, as well. Other than she seems to be exactly the kind of chick a prince would marry. White, blue eyed, very pretty, well spoken, educated and "well bred." In this sense, we are not just celebrating an event, but celebrating met expectations. Billy ain't bucking the trend in Buckingham on this one, and that suits everyone fine.
But I wonder, would this event be as regal if we lifted the veil on April 29th to see William had chosen one of the Real Housewives of Atlanta, or Neil Patrick Harris as his bride?
That, my fellow commoners, would be history made. That would be an event! But to each his own. And maybe it's not such a bad thing to toast... toast here and there. Saluting the Spectacularly Expected. In this world of chaos and unforeseen: All Hail the Prince of "I-Do"ty!
I'd kill to see Neil Patrick Harris as Prince William's "bride". That is hilarious!
