Wait! Don't check your horoscope just yet. According to astronomer Parke Kunkle, changes in the Earth's alignment have caused the zodiac signs to go all loopy. Turns out we've been off by a month. Think you're a Pisces? Nope. You're part of the dawning of the age of Aquarius. There's also a new 13th Zodiac sign, the boringly named Ophiuchus, which sounds more like a character in Clash of the Titans than an astrological constellation.
Here are the new dates:
Capricorn: Jan. 20 - Feb. 16
Aquarius: Feb. 16 - March 11
Pisces: March 11- April 18
Aries: April 18 - May 13
Taurus: May 13 - June 21
Gemini: June 21 - July 20
Cancer: July 20 - Aug. 10
Leo: Aug. 10 - Sept. 16
Virgo: Sept. 16 - Oct. 30
Libra: Oct. 30 - Nov. 23
Scorpio: Nov. 23 - Nov. 29
Ophiuchus: Nov. 29 - Dec. 17
Sagittarius: Dec. 17 - Jan. 20
Right now you're probably thinking, "What about the Scorpio tattoo on my ankle???" Well, don't rush to tattoo parlor just yet. Turns out if you follow the tropical zodiac--which is based on the seasons--nothing will change. It's the constellation-based sidereal zodiac, popular in the Eastern hemisphere, which has shifted.
So the next time a cheesy guy asks for your sign, you can shut him down by saying, "Well, I'm a Leo, but according to the Eastern sidereal zodiac I'm a Cancer. Either way I'm not going home with you tonight."
Do you believe in astrological signs? If so, how does it affect your dating choices? Any signs you avoid in men?

I really don't believe in Astrology, but I would like to be an Ophiuchus just because of the name. It's pretty intense, ha. Despite my wishes I am an Aries and/or Pisces.
Actually, it only applies to those born after 2009. Yay, I'm still a Cancer :)
Actually its always been loopy. Astrology was created by the greeks based on their constilation. The earth axis shifts over time and the positions change, yet we are still using the same positions as the the greeks used Greek, even though our constilations are totaly different now.
Even though i dont belive in it, its still fun. im a scorpio and since its the most sexual of the signs all the men start drooling when i tell them. I find it funny that they think that just because I was born in a certain month, ill be more likely to jump into bed with them. But its also a good thing because everyone knows its never a smart idea to mess with a Scorpio.

You kidding? Scorpios are by far the best to mess with.
Carefully.
Me likey, MM. I'm a Scorpio... and what they say about is SO true!
I'm now a Tarus? That's BULL!! :)
Ha ha ha...!
I love being a Gemini, I was my own evil twin! (she says with a glem in her eye)
I had a guy very sadly state that we could never get married because I was on the libra/scorpio cusp, and while libras would normally find it difficult to be faithful/monogamous libra/scorpios find it nearly impossible. He said he loved and he wanted me for as long as I would have him, but he said love wasn't usually enough for libra/scorpios and he knew he wouldn't be enough for me for long.....needless to say that was a weird relationship. How do you argue with someone who has so many books on astrology and spends hours mapping out charts and stuff, it was his belief system, he didn't believe in anything else. SO while I wanted to call BS you're just a commitmentphobe, and you're looking for an excuse to end things. To this guy it would kind of be like going to a Christian and say "Hey that Jesus crap you always spouting, it's a bunch of sh** and you know it. Your just saying it to get rid of me." He believed it that strongly...C'est la vie
its bogus!

i don't live my life based on the stars but i do enjoy reading my horoscope every now and again...and yay! i'm still a virgo!
I refuse to acknowledge this new zodiac sign because there is no corresponding colony in Battlestar Galactica.
Chic Geek likes this.
I was a sagittarius 10 minutes ago, now I am Ophiuchus. WHOA.
Anyway, I keep saying to avoid capricorns but punctually I always find myself surrounded by them and heart-broke. Yay for consistency!
It gets even better, because you see there are other astrological factors that affect the personality not just your Sun sign. There is so much more complexity to it! Like where the moon was positioned when a person was born, and the ascending sign. Then there are other positions like Mercury, Venus, and Mars. Ex: I am a Gemini(sun sign), with my moon in Pisces(which affects the emotions, the inside), and my ascending sign is in Taurus(which would affect how people perceive me, the cover to a book). So right there I am a mess! The best way I can explain this combination is: I can dish it but I cant take it, and at first glance I appear to be stubborn and materialistic. Lol, no, that is a very simple interpretation. There were very important people that contributed to the study of Astrology. My personal favorite was Sir Issac Newton. He believed that gravity had an effect on everything in the universe. So he figured the same notion applied to our psyches, and our destinies. Kind of interesting, and to the naysayers he would reply: " I have studied the matter, sir, and you have not!" It is interesting, but really should be taken with a grain of salt, because there is a whole spectrum of things that contribute to personalities, not just the positions of objects in space. That concludes my rant.
IDENTITY CRISIS!!!! ;)
hahaha! yeah, now I'm a cancer..
No sir, I don't use astrology to define a relationship, I'd rather see the connection between the person in front me and I. Though it IS fun to read horoscops from time to time, but it barely works with me..
and I agree with Name on this: the sun sign ain't the only explaination of our character.. okay, there's the moon and the ascendant (I'm a Leo with the Libra in ascendant and my moon sign is capricorn : I'm proud, autoritarian and social as a leo, hesitating and avoiding conflicts as a libra, hardworking and solitarian as a capricorn), but there's biology in it too : "weirdly", I'm proud and social like my dad, hesitating like my sister, hardworking and avoiding conflicts like my mother, autoritarian and curious like my grandmother....
Does astrology influence on it..? maybe, maybe not... ;)
I dont understand how theres a 13th sign yet there are still 12 months.. wait.. IS THERE A NEW MONTH NOW?!
Um. I take so many issues with this. Not with you, Nick, just the whole shebang in general. You still rock. Rock on.
Disclaimer: I am a scientist. You can trust me. If you dare.
1. The Earth's rotation on its axis doesn't just change over New Years, it takes approximately 26,000 (26 THOUSAND YEARS) to make a whole cycle, 13,000 for a half, which would be the greatest amount of change possible since at 26,000 years you are back where you started. What happens is that the Earth wobbles on its axis a bit, meaning that polar north changes ever so slightly over time. Whatever happened between now and when I was born in 1987 is not even a hair width on that scale. To be exact, for 23 years of life, that's like 0.09% change. That's like: you have 100 pennies ($1), take one penny, cut it into 100 pieces, and not even one of those 100 pieces of one penny out of all your 100 pennies ($1) is how important this is. If you are the oldest person in the world, you can take a whole half of one penny. That's how big of a change this is for you. If you are between 23 and 123, you fall somewhere in between there.
***I don't know what this astrologer is talking about, with "changes in the Earth's alignment," because they are insignificant in any one human's lifetime.***
1a. For those of you who are going to say, "but since Ancient Greece established the constellations, it's been thousands of years! That's significant!" see #3.
2. There have always been 13 zodiac signs. I didn't know that til just now when I wikied it, but the constellation Ophiuchus was always on the ecliptic (aka the path that the Sun takes across Earth's sky, it passes through 13 specific constellations and no others). So people from either sign surrounding Ophiochus (Scorpios and Sagittariuses)- I don't know how that works. The Sun has definitely been passing through there all these years.
***Some of you are zodiacal bastard children, sorry. ***
3. How come all of the astrological months are just magically shortened? Earth still takes the same amount of time to watch the Sun "pass through" all the signs as it always did. It just might not correspond to the same calendar day of the year. If you want to know your legit Sun sign, go and find a search engine that lets you put in your birthdate and calculates the position of the Sun at that time on that day.
***Seems like Marie is right, in that you are still whatever sign you were born under. Or, for reassurance, look it up here: http://www.prokerala.com/astrology/nakshatra-finder/
4. I hope that was helpful to someone!
***Identity crises averted?***
5. Nick... I don't avoid any signs but Virgos and I (a Libra) consistently do not get along.
