10 Awesome Songs About Being Alone For Valentine's Day

Okay, so maybe you don't have a hot date on Valentine's Day. (Or even a lukewarm date with a friend with benefits.) Even worse, every song you hear is about love and happy couples.

Well, screw that. You need a mix of peppy, fun songs about how awesome it is to be alone. Okay, they aren't all about how great it is to be alone, but the songs below all deal with loneliness or solitude and are just what you need to get you out of your funk. Check them out below, and add yours in the comments.

"One," Aimee Mann - You might know this Harry Nilsson classic from the Magnolia soundtrack, ably covered by Aimee Mann. One may be the loneliest number, but it inspired one fantastic song.

"Alone in Kyoto," Air - A track from the great Lost in Translation soundtrack, which plays while Scarlett Johansson is wandering around Japan being all wide-eyed and big-lipped and Scarlett Johansson-y. Really moody and great for deep thoughts.

"Message In a Bottle, " Police -  Hey, at least you're not stuck on a desert island like Sting in this song. Oh, who are we kidding? Sting would be fine on a desert island. He'd probably go into some kind of tantric state and have mind sex with tons of ladies.

"Ask the Lonely," Journey - "When you're lost in deep despair/you just ask the lonely." Who are "the lonely" exactly? Sounds like "The Nothing" from The Neverending Story

"Me, Myself, I," Joan Armatrading- "I sit hear by myself/and you know I love it..." A really rocking song about flying solo. Shocked no one has ever covered this one. Runner-up: Beyonce's "Me, Myself, I" which has absolutely nothing to do with this song but is pretty good and also I just want to get hits from anyone searching "Beyonce baby." Hi, Beyonce fan! How about that baby Blue Ivy, right? When are we going to see a photo, amirite???

"Alone Again (Naturally)" -- Admittedly, this song is reaaaaally depressing. The narrator ponders suicides, remembers his dead dad, and questions the existence of God. But there's something soothing about it as well. Perhaps it's the dulcet tones of Gilbert O'Sullivan. Plus, listening to it will make you instantly want to call your parents and they really want to hear from you.

"Lonely Boy," Andrew Gold - First off, this song is a freaking jam. It's so peppy, you don't even notice the lyrics about a kid who gets bullied in school and ignored by his parents.(Fun fact: Andrew Gold wrote the theme song for The Golden Girls.)

"I Wanna Dance With Somebody," Whitney Houston - You know that person who bravely hits the dance floor solo, swaying to their own tune? That will be you this Valentine's Day, singleton. Pair this one with Billy Idol's "Dancing With Myself" and...

"Dancing On My Own," Robyn -- A companion piece to the Whitney classic, by everyone's favorite dance music artist who isn't Lady Gaga. There's a real palpable sense of unrequited love to Robyn's music. "I'm in the corner/watching you kiss her." Pair this one with "Call Your Girlfriend" and you'll realize that no one pines as hard as Robyn.

"Leave Me Alone," Michael Jackson - Alright, fine, so it's basically MJ telling the paparazzi and tabloids to stop paying attention to his crazy behavior. But that doesn't mean that you can't apply the lyrics and that insanely awesome piano line to your life. Like Michael, sometimes we just need to be alone with our monkey and our original collection of the Elephant Man's bones. Or, you know, some Arrested Development DVDs and a nice bottle of wine. Whatever floats your boat.

And of course:

Amy Winehouse, "Wake Up Alone"; "Alone," Lisa Loeb; "All By Myself," Eric Carmen; "Alone Again Or," Love; "Eleanor Rigby," The Beatles; "Creep," Radiohead; "Mr. Lonely," Akon.

How about we single chicks focus on songs about, oh, I don't know, say, anything else? I say we bring on the rap and rock anthems. I for one will be standing on the coffee table in a towel after a long hot shower, singing to the cats.

Look, V-Day is on a Tuesday. It's just a work day for most, so the time we feel a "void" is mostly the evening. There's decent TV on Tuesdays, running the gamut of weight loss or gain, watching The Biggest Loser or Cupcake Wars, then there's Law and Order & NCIS, and a variety of reality crap like Real Housewives of some city. So, after you karaoke in the shower to Nick's songs, just jump on the couch and chill with some high calorie carbs, and revel in the fact that we do NOT have to deal with the unmet expectations of generic forced compliments, crowded restaurants with tacky heart decor, or the "cheap" rose bouquet that screams "he got a good deal on the short stemmed ones!".

Let's put on our sweats, sloth on the sofa and enjoy a few unabashed hours of low self control. Now THAT'S love.

Valentine's Day by Linkin Park. No, it's not an empowering son. In fact, a lot of the imagery is pretty dark. But it's really pretty, and I like it. So I think you should give it a chance, too. :3
