A little while back, a reader asked for suggestions for the top 10 songs about moving on after a break-up. I offered a list of some of my favorites, and our esteemed readers shared their picks. In an effort to give you the ultimate mix to get over your heartache, here are 20 songs about moving on as chosen by myself and GuySpeak readers.
Cake, "I Will Survive" - Somehow the monotone singing makes it even more defiant than the Gloria Gaynor version.
Go West, "King of Wishful Thinking" - "I'll get over you/I know I will/I'll pretend my ship's not sinking..." The soundtrack for many divorced moms and dads during the 1980s.
John Waite, "Missing You" - The soundtrack for many divorcees during the '80s, part 2.
Norah Jones, "Don't Miss You At All" - This would make a good twofer with "Missing You" on a "get over him" mix.
OMD, "If You Leave" - I won't cry...much.
A Fine Frenzy, "Almost Lover" - "Goodbye my almost lover/goodbye my hopeless dream..." The fact that A Fine Frenzy isn't more famous than Ke$ha is a crime, folks.
Bernadette Peters, "We Do Not Belong Together/Move On" - From Sunday in the Park With George. For the musical theater geeks out there, watch Peters performing the song live and try not to get chills.
Johnny Nash, "I Can See Clearly Now" - This is also Al Roker's favorite song.
Toto, "I'll Be Over You" - I wonder if this song (featuring super smooth backing vocals by Michael McDonald) is the sequel to "Rosanna." That Rosanna Arquette. What a heartbreaker.
Beyonce, "Irreplaceable" - Even though she says he shouldn't think for a moment that he's irreplacable, she still packs his stuff up in a box. Oh, Beyonce. Always thinking of others.
Fiona Apple, "Get Gone" - How's this for a kiss-off? "How many times do I have to say, to get away, get gone/Flip your sh--t past another lasses' humble dwelling/put away that meat you're selling..." Fiona Apple is an underrated lyricist.
Elton John, "I'm Still Standing" - Ever notice how the opening piano riff of "I'm Still Standing" kind of sounds like the Ducktales theme song? Listen to both back to back and tell me that I'm not crazy. ("I'm Still Standing." Ducktales theme song.)
Jay-Z, "On to the Next One" - Granted, he's talking about hot beats, designer clothes, and fancy cars. But the sentiment works just the same.
Bill Withers, "Lovely Day" - Bill Withers eases the pain.
Mary J. Blige, "Just Fine" - Or "No More Drama." Pretty much any MJB song works.
Scandal, "Goodbye to You" - Pair it with "The Warrior" for the ultimate Scandal pump-up mix.
The Kinks, "Better Things" - The Dar Williams cover is also pretty good
"Tears Dry On Their Own," Amy Winehouse - GuySpeak misses you, Amy.
Flight of the Conchords, "I'm Not Crying" - Don't forget to laugh through those drying tears.
The Beatles, "Getting Better" - Also try John Lennon's "Beautiful Boy" which includes the famous line, "Every day, in every way, it's getting better and better."

Bad English…, I Ani’t Missing You
Not a break-up song, but John Lennon's "Instant Karma" because of the chorus of "We all shine on, like the moon, the stars and the sun."
Spencer Bell: Beautiful More So, "Do what I can to forget about you, cause your love un-made me."
Adele's Rolling in the Deep. Alanis Moiressette's You Oughta Know. Katy Perry's Circle the Drain... All beautifully angry knowing he-will-be-missing-you songs.
Beyonce - Best Thing I Never Had! Best line ever... "find the good in goodbye"
Oh yeah, that's a good one too...
before he cheats, carrie underwood lol "the next time that he cheats, oh you know it won't be on meeeeee
Probably any cheesy Taylor swift song that bashes the last guy she dated through song lyrics.
"Set Fire to the Rain" and "Someone Like You" both by Adele.
I have been in the midst of a mad girl crush on Adele for nearly a year now, and I LOOOOVE her, but Someone Like You is not good for post-breakup. That song makes me cry my eyes out and I am in a happy healthy relationship - I can't imagine if I lost this guy what I would do if I heard that song lol.
"Jar of hearts" by ?
Christina Perri
So What by Pink.
So What by Pink.
Ingram Hill- "On My Way"
(I don't have to find a reason
And I don't have to answer why
It doesn't matter who is wrong here
I just wanna see you cry
And on my way I'll take the sunshine
On my way I'll take your dreams
On my way I'll say I'm sorry to no one but me)
Better in Time- Leona Lewis
"Rosanna" was not written with her in mind. She was dating Steve Porcaro of Toto and the songwriter David Paich decided to use Porcaro's gf's name. "I'll Get Over You" was written by Steve Lukather and Randy Goodrum.
Right. But it as named after her. I think they've downplayed the connection in recent years since she got annoyed.
Did you know Toto wrote Michael Jackson's "Human Nature"? And played on several songs on "Thriller"? Well, did ya??? Who's the Toto expert now???
Lol - I am too young to be a Toto expert! I looked it up. Also read Toto's not thrilled either having their music overshadowed by Rosanna Arquette.
*cough* Burn
Good lord, the Flight of the Conchords was awful. But you're forgiven for including Scandal, John Waite, The Beatles and A Fine Frenzy!!!
I like " Here's a Quater Call Someone Who Care's"
Ooh, I think Almost Lover is a horrid 'Moving On' song. I mean, I love the song, but still...
Not really a moving on song, but it helped me. I could finally let go and let it all out while listening to it. It's 'Hardest of Hearts' by Florence + the Machine.
